Can you play too low a limit?

Postby Rixter » Fri Jun 22, 2007 8:00 am

A very sweeping statement folks, but I'm interested in any opinions/experiences of playing limits you might consider too low for your level of experience.

Hellofa statement, I know. Either my head is stuck firmly up my own ass, or maybe I have a flavour of a point.

Me: have been playing NL for 4+ years & have thousands of hours clocked up. I have read loads of books, re-read loads of books, continually reading forums & always looking to improve my game. I've progressed from a fish playing my cards to being more focused on playing players, position, chip stacks etc blah. All on-line btw.

To the point: I've always played small time (£10-20 STT's, MTT's, HU and recently small cash games too) & did ok. Recently I cut back (nearly married) to micro stakes & I am getting my ass truly whipped!!!!!

My recent favourite was my AKs going 6x BB in a .1 to .2 cash game only to be called by some ass with 28os. I hit my flush by the river but board had paired 224 flop & he hit his 8 on the river. The board looked crap, I had him down for trips, but the other cards were something like 8 10 so I called his all-in push out of disbelief.

It happens regularly in STT's where I usually have a high ROI where I try putting in some moves & they just haven't a clue what I just did & I get called by all sorts of crap. I would love to move up to games of 100$+ cuz I think I could hold my own & then some. But then again, maybe my head is stuck up my ass

Sigh, needed to vent that. More than answering this cuz I know the answer, figured I would be interested in hearing similar stories...

Cheers,

Rixter

yeah no need to play the player at micro stakes. People think bluffing frequency is > ~50 % so its +EV to call an overbet with an underpair. Especially when someone tries to bluff when there is one to a straight or 4 of same suit on board.
Always bet on duke

For me it would be the fact that i just wouldnt care about the money at like 25nl. Which would lead to fancy play syndrome and a total ruining of my game.

The 200 vs 400 is the weirdest split for me. 400 NL is acutally eaiser for me to play. I am much better at putting players on hands at 400NL than I am at 200NL. I overthink or out think myself at 200NL or something whereby at 400NL things flow well for me and I usually know where I am at and can put players on hands, anticipate the action, etc. I don't know why this is though. I think other people have the opposite experience between these two levels.
If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid.
