(50 NL) I have no respect for weak leads

Postby EscapePlan9 » Mon Jul 16, 2007 3:40 am

Hand 1:

Full Tilt Poker
No Limit Holdem Ring game
Blinds: $0.25/$0.50
6 players

Stack sizes:
UTG: $92.60
UTG+1: $50
EP9: $54.20
Button: $47
SB: $49.70
BB: $47.75

Pre-flop: (6 players) EP9 is CO with [Kh] [Js]
2 folds, EP9 raises to $1.75, 2 folds, BB calls.

Flop: [4s] [6h] [Qc] ($3.75, 2 players)
BB bets $3.5, EP9 calls.

Turn: [9h] ($10.75, 2 players)
BB bets $8, EP9 raises to $22

Only been at the table about 30 hands. I still make these plays often against weak leads. I either raise the flop or the turn. Generally if it's more coordinated, I raise the flop, less coordinated I raise the turn. I pretty much need a read on villain being a calling station to not play back at weak leads. I'd estimate 50% of my NL cash profit is from making plays off of weak leads.

Hand 2:
Full Tilt Poker
No Limit Holdem Ring game
Blinds: $0.25/$0.50
5 players

Stack sizes:

3 folds, SB calls, EP9 raises to $1.5, SB calls.

Flop: [2c] [8c] [6s] ($3, 2 players)
SB bets $3, EP9 raises to $8, SB calls.

Turn: [4h] ($19, 2 players)
SB checks, EP9 bets $14

Like I said, I make these plays a LOT

By weak lead I mean instead of checking to the raiser, they lead with a bet. This usually means "I have a weak hand, but maybe you'll fold if you miss".

ah... as i understood it, a weak lead is a smallish bet (proportionally) into a pot from oop.

I guess. Anyways... I find that most players at 50NL are far morely likely to slowplay their big hands than lead with a pot-bet. Against known TAGs I don't make these plays.

I end up taking down these pots a little more than 90% of the time when I make these plays.

I make these plays religiously as well, however I have noticed one thing. If you're going to do it, do it on the flop. Several timews I have tried to rep a monster by flat calling on the flop an dthen raising the turn, I invariably get called (wich is why I guess people actually play their monsters that way). Make the move on the flop and only fire a second barrel if you don't have outs or have a good read that he will fold. So I think hand #2 is Ok but #1 and #3 is wrong.

to be honest, i'm not too comfortable making moves in these particular spots. i feel like alot of times, here, i'm up against top pair type hands and i consider it a mistake to try to make an opponent in 50nl lay down tp. but then again, i could just be real passive like.

I don't really consider these as weak leads, as they are more or less pot sized.
But yeah raising weak lead (a typical exemple : you raise and one of the blinds call, and they immediatly minbet (or doublebet) on the flop) nearly always allows you to take the pot. In that case i nearly 100% raise with a potsized bet, and it's very EV+ according to pokerEV. Of course sometime they are trapping with a real hand, but it usualy means a weak draw or nothing-bottom pair.

It's because so many standard TAGs just fold to the pot-bet lead that they keep leading those flops. I give them hell instead :)

Make sure you don't do it much against TAGs or calling stations. TAGs are far more likely to lead the flop with bigger hands, and calling stations will not fold.

You bet sizing is way too small.
