2/5 NL, Would you run the river more than once in this spot?

Postby dennerman » Tue Aug 07, 2007 9:39 am

My opponent has pushed all-in after the turn and I made the call. I'm ahead but he has a lot more outs than I suspected. I have two pair and he has an open ended straight draw, a flush draw and can hit trips if another 4 comes. All told he has 16 outs with just the river to come. He has a 34.8% chance to hit one of his outs and he suggested we run the river twice. I opted not to and he hit a club on the river to win a $1,600 pot. What stings is that I was up $300 and was getting ready to leave in 15 minutes so I didn't have time to build a stack back up and had to leave down for the night even though I had played well. More of a mental hit from the timing than anything else.

My question is, should I have run the river more than once? I've never taken this option before but it seems I might have suggested running it three times just to keep my variance a little more evened out, especially at the very end of the night. What are people's thoughts on this if any?

It's up to you - if you want to reduce your variance, run it twice. If you want to keep your variance high, run it once. I don't know why anyone would really want to keep their variance high so I would run it twice.
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

If I was about to leave I would run it twice. I HATE leaving right after a big loss. It makes me feel like shot the whoel ride home and then some.

Running it twice, three times, 24 times in the long run it makes no difference but in the short term the turn of one card can be a huge swing. If leaving behind has a large mental impact on you, then run it as many times as you possibly can and minimize your variance as much as you can. You really need to work on being less results oriented, questions like this show how much winning in a single session means to you and it really shouldn't. The fact that you got all your money in in a $1600 pot as a 2:1 favorite should make you happy, getting sucked out sucks(I know I've had a nice run of them this weekend) but that is poker, if you aren't getting sucked out it means that your opponents aren't putting their money in against you in bad spots and that is not a good thing for your long term results. In this case you got yourself in a very good spot but you are still leaving a loser one out of three times. I do play at one room that allows you to run it twice and I usually just agree to what the other person wants because as I said long run it really makes no difference.

Actually it does make a difference if you play the same people alot. People will be less willing to shove in with a draw if they know you wont run it twice.
