Winning Small and Losing Big

Postby Ben » Sat Dec 18, 2004 11:00 pm

I've had a rough week. I'm down probably 120BB or so. I'm missing the flop a lot. My big starting hands are getting run down by the river. I can't even count the number of times I've had players dominated pre-flop and yet end up losing.

Anyway... just venting a little little. On to my question. It seems like the pots I'm winning are relatively small and at the same time, the pots I'm losing are large. Any ideas on what might be causing this? I've reviewed many of my hands and it seems like I'm still playing well. I just can't seem to win many hands lately. I'm hoping it's a bad run that will be over soon. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Do something, to change things around

Postby AdamtheExpert » Sun Dec 19, 2004 6:53 am

Ok, I don't want to here from the "scienceies" who will try to tell me that I am wrong.
Remember, it's you guys who say that a bumblebee can't fly (but they do)

My 18 years of experience, count for a LOT MORE than any silly scientific theories.

Ok, that said.

When you're getting your butt kicked, do something to chance your circumstances.

yeah, this is going to sound like the most untrue gobbledygook, BUT IT WORKS.

Try another site, another type of game. I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU, how often this has worked for me.

ON THE SCIENTIFIC SIDE, there are clear benefits to this. Mentally, you feel as though you have a fresh start, a new chance.

There are GREY AREAS to poker, that CANNOT be quantified, or explained in mathmatical and/or scientific terms.

Anyone remember the old star trek ephisode, when there was some space anomily that SHOULD NOT have existed, (in scientific terms) and it killed a whole crew of a starship?

You see, the whole crew, was VULCAN, and they just could not accept that something that should not have exisist, was still killing them.

THE same exists in poker. People who strictly think that poker is 100% math and science, CAN NEVER WIN in the long run.

ART is a big part of poker. And that includes doing things that would seem to have no factual basis to work .. . . .

BUT THEY DO

Think about it . . . .What can you lose, by trying it MY waY? At least TRY to break the streak, by doing what I suggested.

Now, on to the more scientific side of things. Ask yourself, if you're doing something wrong. Playing the wrong hands, staying in with innapropriate draws.

Everyone runs bad, but many compound the bad luck, with bad play and just worsten their own situation.

Try a fresh start on another site, another game

BELEIVE ME, MY FRIEND, THERE IS LIFE AFTER the site you are currently playing.

Now that I'm famous, I guess I can't say bad things about them.

I have to agree that changing sites sometimes has changed my luck. Its not that the luck changed of course, but you sometimes get a fresh outlook on things and you can think more clearly. At Full Tilt Poker, you can change the background of the poker table to about 6 different things which helps keep things fresh.

In a real casino, you have people walking around and see different players and dealers, but online, staring atthe same screen all the time can be monotonous.

I will agree that changing games can help too. I was playing limit holdem exclusively until I tried playing PL Omaha. I got into a rut and lost a good amount of buy ins (probably part my fault but definately cold cards and suck outs too). So, I decided to go back to Holdem for a short time (lost there too but that's a different story) and went back to Omaha and feel refreshed.
