I have a hand I would like you guys to see and a few questions that follow in regards to floating, as it is new to me.

Stacks:

Hero: $250 (CO)

Villian:$350 (EP)


Notes:


He is agressive and been getting involved in alot of pot with another plater across the table. Has shown down some suspect holdings. Like offsuit paint, unsuited connectors.


Hand:


Villian raises $8, I call with [6s] and BB calls


flop; [7h][3d] $24 (3 Players)

BB checks, Villian bets $12.50, I call $12.50, BB folds

turn: $49 (3 Players)

Villian checks, I check

River: $49

Villian bets $24, I call $24


Analysis:


I was gonna bet the turn, but then thought that he is aggro and if check behind he is gonna bet ALOT of the time. But then thought that this check was bad as now he wil lbet hands like 88-QQ and he may have folded those on the turn if I bet? If i am floating a flop with an Ace I think it is best if I bet the turn to rep it. If it was a 724T board a check may have been better to illcit a bet from overs. thoughts?


Questions:


When do you gus determine when to bet a turn and when to check?

If a scare card come bet? If a bad card comes for u check?

If he is aggro check? Passive bet?


Any help or thoughts would be great!

Bet when the board or turn card is likely to have hit your range, but missed his.
Bet if he's a tight player and is capable of folding.
Bet if you have outs in case you are called.
Bet if you have no chance of winning the pot at showdown and are willing to take a stab.

Don't bet if your bet will make no sense and he's smart.
Don't bet if he's a calling station.
Don't bet if you have a hand that wants to showdown in a small pot.
Don't bet if you have a sweet draw that can't stand a check raise.
Don't bet if your opponent is tricky and likes to check raise.

That's all I can think of for now.

I prefer it if you just raise the flop.

In the end, you called 24 on the river and you are pretty much just hoping he had air. So, you could have raised the flop by that 24 and come out wtih the same amount spent on the hand, but you would know for sure.

Also when you raise the flop:
-He might fold 88/99/TT there since you are repping an ace.
-You are not letting the 1 zillion overcards draw against you for cheap, and he seems to play any paint. In this case, JT just sucked out on you. The turn or river will usually put down some card higher than 7 so you could have a difficult decision later. What do you do if he pots the river? Ugh. What do you do when some paint falls? Ugh.
-Say he has an Ace. He still calls your raise, but he will almost always check the turn to you. Now you get to see all 5 cards and perhaps hit a 7 or 6 where you really get paid off. You dont' lose anymore though.
-This is what you would do with a set, no (i.e., raise the flop)? Doing it with 2nd pair makes you tough to read.

If you want to wait till the turn that's okay. But I think the point of floating is to take the hand away from him, not to get to a showdown.

Dont try to float out of position and some of these problems solve themselves.

When you call with middle pair, you are "floating" as we use the definition. You are calling his bet with what might be the best hand.

I wasn't OOP though? Oh and he had AK.
