Absolute nuts, do I want to push out 2 pair? (PLO8)

Postby MTPaid » Sat Jan 12, 2008 9:06 pm

Just 1 hand, 1 concept. I have the nuts each way on the turn. Do I want to push out players behind me who might have 2 pair or do I want to encourage a lot of action?

I am not a huge fan of how you played most of this hand

Pre-flop
At a full ring I don't like the preflop call OOP with A3s. Unless the raiser is known to be a loose raiser it is likely that he has A2 which you don't want to play against OOP.

Flop
It depends on how aggressive the raiser is but it is unlikely that he liked that flop unless he was playing AA + low (not 2) or A23. If he likely to CB a CR isn't a horrible idea but most of the time I would have lead into him.

Turn
I raise here (of course I and an aggressive bastard and would have bet the flop), I generally try to hit home runs on hands like these because it only takes 1 to overcome all the value bets you might have lost. There really are 4 options
1) BB has complete air
2) BB has a mediocre hand that won't stand up to pressure (K high flush)
3) BB has a good hand that he doesn't want to let go of but doesn't want to felt (naked A3 or a 2 way hand that you beat in both directions A 4d Td X)
4) BB has a big hand that he is willing to felt

- If BB has air it is very likely that $2.9 is all you are going to get out of him.
- If BB has a mediocre hand a raise will scare him off where a turn call might get another 1/2 pot bet out of him on the river.
- If the BB has a good hand a raise on the turn will get more money in the pot to make him call a larger river bet.
- If BB has a felting hand it is going to matter what you do the chips are all going in.

If he you raise ands he has a mediocre hand you lose the river value bet; however if he has a good hand and you call the pot will be much smaller on the river and you lose even more value. The major question is what is the probability that he has a mediocre hand vs a good hand and IMO people at this level can't fold a nut low so the probability are close. If I am right that would mean is makes a lot more sense to raise. Couple that with the possibility that he has a set / 2 pair / A4 and calling would give him a change to suck out on you for 1/2 the pot.

Of course this is all greatly simplified (but I think you question was asked as a general concept so that shouldn't be a big problem). Also unless you are playing some VERY bad players nobody is going to stay in this pot with 2 pair.
Rhound - I got 2 outted in a $2000 pot last year, I have also broke a cup in half playing catcher. The feelings were similar.

Thanks guys. I'll limp these hands when I'm at unaggressive tables preflop, which is what this one was. Obviously, a rare raise occurs when I limp though.

I probably would have gone with the check-raise if CO had bet since he was on my left and I'd be last to act. Even though he checked I wasn't horribly upset as I could have been counterfeited with an A or 3 for low or a paired board on the turn. It happens so often that I'd just assume see the safe turn card. I'll still usually get action from any lower flush anyway at this level.

The entire hand.......

pf... this limp/call is fine. just like jd said, the side cards are too good to pass up. the catch to making this a +ev play is how you play post-flop, so....

flop - you really need to know your pf raiser. a cr would be nice, especially if you can trap some people in the middle (of the pfr and you due to relative position). but since you're next to last, and a deuce hit (A2xx being a big part of his range here), then i'd prefer to bet unless he cbed something like 90% of the time (there are pahud stats on this kind of thing)

turn - if you get the cr in, the hand plays itself (all in on the turn). if you bet... well, same thing.... pound the turn most of the time, and occasionally throw in a turn check if villain likes to float/sponge. as played, i raise hoping to get 3/4 from a nut low.

I don't have PT Omaha. I've never really played any form of the game seriously before, but I do plan on purchasing if I continue with it. Probably not until the newest version comes out though.
