NL25 - Playing AQ from the blinds in loose games

Postby bdon22 » Sun Jan 27, 2008 11:32 pm

How do you play AQ from the blinds in loose games where there have been a few limpers and 1-2 of them are loose calling stations?

I seem to be spewing money here by raising and then CB'ing flops I miss at, every time to these loose players.

It's been happening to me a lot lately and I'm starting to think it's a big leak. Do I just complete and continue only when I flop something? Or still put in a standard raise but be more selective with my CBs? How does this change with AJ and AK?

Here's an example from tonight:

$0.1/$0.25 No Limit Holdem
6 players
Converted at

Stacks:
UTG ($23.15)
UTG+1 ($28.55)
CO ($9.00)
BTN ($39.00)
Hero ($31.05)
BB ($3.40)

Pre-flop: ($0.35, 6 players) Hero is SB [As][Qc]
2 folds, CO calls $0.25, BTN calls $0.25, Hero raises to $1.5, 1 fold, CO calls $1.25, BTN calls $1.25

Flop: [5c][9h][4c] ($4.75, 3 players)
Hero bets $4, CO goes all-in $7.5, 1 fold, Hero calls $3.5

Turn: [Ts] ($19.75, 2 players)

River: [9s] ($19.75, 2 players)

Final Pot: $19.75
Hero shows: [As][Qc]
CO shows: [Qh][5h]

CO wins $18.8 ( won +$9.8 )
BTN lost -$1.50
Hero lost -$9.00

I tax them more. My standard raise is 4xbb + 1bb per limper + 1bb or more (depending on how loose the table is) if I'm raising from the blinds. I always raise limpers w/AQ and AK from the blinds. AJ really depends on table/my image.

I would not cbet this flop against two ppl. It sucks, but I'd just ck/fold. CO's stack makes this easier to c/f.

As above, raise more preflop.

This is a pretty bad flop to continuation bet, as the villians range is skewed more towards sets and draws here, and more importantly the cut-off is a shortie.

Try and look at peoples stack sizes before you go ahead and Cbet into someone OOP with ace high.

And be glad there are people at your table who will call off their stack with Q5.

In these situations with AQ type hands I only CB the flop when I get 1 caller not 2. I will still CB the flop with 2 callers sometimes in late position but not when I'm blind.

I got my hair highlighted, because I felt some strands were more important that others.

That flop is a bad one to cbet even if one player limp/called.

The good thing about bad players is they often check behind with their draws and second pairs etc, so just check it down and try hit one of your overs.
