Two common spots versus donks (200NL 6 max)

Postby LuparFiend » Fri Feb 08, 2008 1:27 pm

I'm grouping these two together because I think they are pretty common spots that us decent TAGs/LAGs run into. And to tell you the truth, these are the ones that give me the most trouble because it is a lot harder to put donks on certain hands/ranges. I actually lose more money to donks than to regulars, mainly because I can hand read vs the regulars better, plus I avoid the good regulars as much as possible (By not sitting with them, or by tightening up against them)

Hand 1

1/2 NL 6 max with efective stacks around $200. Table is pretty loose. I am in the SB with AJs. UTG, CO, Button all limp to me. I pump it all the way up to $15. Pretty standard for me, as I will take down the $9 already in the pot a lot of the time. The button donk calls. He is running about 35/18 and slightly a maniac.

Flop comes [Jh] [7s] [3c]. Perfect flop there, as there are no draw except for gutshots. I lead out for about 2/3 pot continuation bet. He min-raises.

What do you do here? 3-bet? Just call? Seems like a spot where I am either way ahead or way behind, right?

Hand 2

1/2 NL 6 max. I raise [Td] [9d] on the button. Only the BB calls, who has $150 in his stack. Not much of read on him. he had stats of around 33/10, but that was on only 30 hands..

Flop is [Qs] [Th] [8c]. He checks, I c-bet $12 into the $15 pot. He calls.

Turn is the [4h]. He checks, and I check behind (Do you bet here????)

River is [Tc]. He immediately bets the pot ($39). He has $100 left.

I see this happen so often. When you check behind on the turn, donks will lead out on the river 90% of the time. Do I take him to value town and get something like a Queen to call? Or do I just call this?

Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.

1.
Not a fan of the pfr to be perfectly honest. Playing a hand oop that doesn't exactly play well in that spot isn't a great idea. AQ is raisable, but AJ seems too weak IMHO. Anyway.

SHOVE. If he has a bigger hand, then nihan him.

2.
I often bet the turn here, but only if I think they won't CRAI bluff/semi bluff. Shove the river here, easy. Take him to value town...hope he doesn't have JT+.

Thanks for the info on Hand 1. You really think raising a buch of limpers from the SB is a bad play? So just AQ+ and what, 99+ for pocket pairs?

Anyways, Hand 1, I did flat call his min-raise. I didn't want to scare away a TP crap kicker, or 2nd pair or something like that.

A Queen came on the river (EDIT) . What to do now?

Rank the following:
- Check/fold
- Check/call
- Check/raise All-in
- Bet/fold
- Bet/3bet

Depends on the turn action and turn card.

Results

Hand 1

I decided to go with the Bet/call route for some reason. I led out for about 2/3 size of the pot (which was about half of what I had left), and he pushed and I called.

He obviously had QJ. No really sure what the best route to take here was. If I check, he is betting for sure and I don't think I am folding, which pretty much commits myself to the pot.

Hand 2

I did end up value pushing, and villain had J9 for the flopped straight. uggg.

comments? Am I a donkey? lol
