Facing a 3 bet on the flop

Postby DODGYKEN » Sun Dec 19, 2004 11:17 am

3/6 at Party Poker. I'm dealt Ah Jh in MP. UTG calls (loose passive), I call and CO calls. The BB raises (plays and raises a lot of hands, but seems decent post-flop) and we all call. Flop is 4 handed.

Flop is 5c Ac 7s. BB bets, UTG calls, I raise. The CO now 3-bets. He's only been at the table for 8 hands so I can't really comment on how he plays - he's done nothing extraordinary so far. The BB and the UTG both call. I call too.

The turn is the 2h. It is checked to me. There are 20 small bets in the pot.

What's your play? Results to follow.

Check-fold in the absence of a J on the turn would be my suggestion. Between them either the BB or the CO surely has AK or AQ. I think CO could even have a set. The loose UTG could have just about anything, a gutshot, middle pair, or flush draw would be favourites. I think you have to give CO credit here. If CO had 3 bet the flop and BB capped, I'd fold here for sure. As it is, I think you have odds to call and hope for a J, but even that is a close one with one of the jacks making a possible flush and the possibility of a set being out from the CO.

These are the kind of situations I hate. You know you are very likely beat. The only thing you are beating is people overplaying their hands like KK of AT, but because of all the betting already, the pot looks nice and it seems that it will likely be one bet on the turn and river to see what happens. You are probably about 90% to lose this hand but the few times you win it makes you sick to your stomach. I will agree with monk and fold the turn if no jack appears and hope for a showdown so you see what you were up against and note it.

I think you are most likely facing two pair by the CO. He just limped in, so hitting two pair with Axs or even Axo is pretty reasonable. He could also have a set. Either way with that many players you are likely playing for 3 outs if you have any at all. I would release the hand unless I get a J on the turn.

Tough hand, but I wouldn't give up yet b/c the pot size is pretty big and the cutoff may just be on a draw. Bet the turn and see what happens. If cutoff raises then fold, you are surely beat and may be drawing dead to a set.
When you have the odds, you become smart money.

Ok so the result of this hand:

I decided to check-fold the turn. Retrospectively, this may have been a little weak; a bet would have made sure of where I was (if raised I could've folded).

The CO bet the turn and the other 2 called. River was Ks and it was checked through. CO had AT and the other 2 had flush draws (K high and Q high). So I would've won the pot but I really didn't imagine CO to 3-bet with that holding - plus the fact that there were two other callers - I fully expected to be beaten.

definately note that and be ready to take some pots against him and some beats. If you play against him with that read, you are will have higher variance but if done right, you should be in the positive.
