Well, today didn't go very well. Mostly because I made the lame-brained decision to try some of the 6-max tables. I really think I'd do well playing shorthanded but for the fact that I always get out of control, like I did today. I think I'm gonna take a semi-day-off tomorrow and play some tournies and SNGs. Not sure why, but I'm in a tournament-state-of-mind right now.

Wound up playing about 3 hours today, 3 3-6 tables with a $25 tourny in the backround. Extremely card-dead in the tournament, but managed to hang on only to get eliminated just short of the money when my KK got all-in against AT preflop and lost. Ah well, shit happens.

I made something of a profit at the cash tables, but I'm not happy at all about how I played. In the first 30 minutes I dropped about $150 because my big pairs kept getting cracked. TT in particular sucked a lotta cock. Ran into flopped sets twice, a very passive JJ once, and a lovely 96o gutshot. AA got cracked by an overzealous K8 that hit two pair on the turn, other assorted shit like that. KK...you gotta hear this one, it's hilarious...KK gets into a 4-way capped preflop situation. Flop is all rags, including a 6, and it goes for three bets (one guy check-raised me, other two just called). Turn is another 6, which couldn't possibly have helped anyone. I bet, all three call. River pairs some crap card, I bet, one guy check-raises me, we all call even though I'm now having severe pains in my stomache. I was against JJ, TT, and...Q6s for the winner. WOW! A few other similar hands, not necessarily bad beats, but things like AK/AQ flopping top pair and losing to a flopped set or two pair.

Well, ya know, that stuff happens. What really bothers me is that I could've gotten away from a lot of these hands on the turn, but instead wound up paying off and losing an extra bet or two on each of them. The cards eventually shifted back in my favor, but I continued to make some really stupid call-down and raises, and those bets really add up to a lot. I can't play like that and expect to have anything resembling a decent winrate.

So I'm upset and frustrated about how I played, and yet strangely optimistic. Even with how shameful it is to still be making some of these amatuerish mistakes, I know that I definitely have the ability to play a lot better. And I have a really good feeling that tomorrow is gonna be a great day, regardless of results, because I feel ready to play my absolute A-game. The real challenge is to make sure I have that mindset every single time I play. I've been very inconsistant lately, and that's gotta stop.

It's tough to analyze your game for leaks after you book a win, as I did today, but I know there are a lotta leaks I need to plug. And almost all of them are really just impatience or lack of discipline on my part. So, no more tournies, no more foolin around with shorthanded (did I mention I played some shorthanded today? Yeah, it went fucking badly :) )...I need to start booking 5 or 6 hours every day of solid cash-game play that leaves me with no regrets.

Tomorrow is definitely gonna be a good day.

Cmon Tighty a true mizor can never take a break, I think you know that. And anyway, theres always the temptation to take a short break after a solid win (thats over 100 bets won, good job!) - but dont fall into that because the implied presupposition in that attitude is that you got lucky to win so much and you dont want to give any of it back-- which is the wrong way to look at it. The proper way to look at it is given that your poker play is the stone colds, your low BBs/100 are merely a product of ...uhmm...something or other having to do with math, so your just beginning to even out!

Well, actually I decided I'm not gonna take a break because I'm just too damned addicted! :D Mecos, I think you may have actually made a decent point in there somewhere...the one about taking a break out of fear of giving it back. And in a way it's true. But I'm only afraid of giving my wins back because I really have failed to consistantly play well lately. I KNOW I can play better than I have been lately, and yet I wind up being too easily frustrated or distracted, and it's just a slippery slope from there. Honestly, in the past 4 months, the only breaks I've ever taken were to visit my parents for a couple days per month. It could just be that I could use a couple days off.

Then again, any time I've tried to take a day off, I've wound up playing poker anyway.

also, think of it this way: If poker ever goes real bad, you can make a living just taking a beating from Mecos.

Mecos, can you PM me with the going rate for a steel folding-chair to the nuts? Had a good week and I need something constructive to spend my winnings on.

First off, a sincere thank you to those of you (i.e. Mecos) who encouraged me to keep pluggin away and not take a pansy-ass break. A much less sincere thank you to those of you (i.e. Mecos) who threatened my testicles with aggregious acts of senseless brutality.

But enough about me balls! I played about 5 hours today, and made $220. The poker gods continue to smile 'pon me and my play remains at least a reasonable degree of solid. Hopefully I can squeeze out one more good win tomorrow, and thus be able to do my cash out while still keeping the bankroll above 2K. That'd be really fuckin hot!

Of course, now that I said that, I can pretty much rely on dropping $2-300.

I know what you mean about being able to feel the pulse of the table. There are times when it just clicks and everything you do comes off. I love leading into a raiser on a low flop since everybody and their dog now has read SS2 and thinks I have a set. I got nothing but I "know" you got nothing either and I just scared the beejesus out of yah.

I guess the point I was labouring to make was to have a kind of reset button on your game. I used this a whole lot on limit for those days when I every attempt to make a play lead to me donating to the guy who hit quads that I was sure I could bluff off. I would make all my preflop decisions subject to the chart, with the exception of blind steals cos a guy has to have a little fun. The things I remove are my subjective open raises and isolation plays preflop. These are the things I need to be in the zone to make work.

Out of interest do you use GT Plus or anything similar? If you have written you previously do I apologise before you flame me.

Nope, I don't use GT or anything similar. I realize I should, but from the one time I tried, the little numbers everywhere distracted me and threw me into an utter panic.
