4 high flush - good call?

Postby MacAnthony » Thu Mar 13, 2008 7:22 am

100nl
Hero has [4d] [3d] UTG and raises to $3. CO who is a 18/11 and CB's almost 100% raises it to $12. The rest fold. Hero calls.

Flop [Ad] [Jd] [7d].
Hero Check/Calls $17.

Turn [9h]
Check/Check

River [5d]
Check, Bet $35, Call.

Good or bad spot to catch a bluffer?

Preflop looks pretty bad. I think raising 43s UTG is a little loose (but not too bad) but then callign the 3bet being OOP is quite bad.

The flop c/c is definitely bad.. your hand is strong but also very vulnerable. You want to build the pot and get the money in on the flop. He's going to stack off with a lot of hands that you're ahead of.

The turn is the reason we don't want to c/c the flop because if we check the flop he can check behind on the turn and get a free card. If we c/c the flop I'd like to lead the turn rather than check it.

On the river I don't think it's the best spot to bluff in his spot. He's probably valuebetting any Td+ and checking behind with most hands that have showdown value. I guess he's bluffing something like TT with no diamond sometimes but nowhere near often enough for calling to be profitable.

Were you villain in this hand with QQ with the [Qd] or something?
Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

Yeah, this is ugly. If youre going to play like this preflop, you need to check raise the hell out of this flop. I probably just CRAI. You cant slowplay this.....and better yet..dont need to. You'll get him all in drawing dead sometimes and drawing to 7 or 10 outs alot of times.

Roy was right (isn't that why he's Godlike?). I was the "villain" here, but wanted to get a sense of how well my play was gonna work. So better or worse? I had [Kh] [Kc] and thought I could get a non-diamond Ax to fold there on the end. Was surprised to see his 4 high flush instacalled. My guess was, he was planning on hitting me on the turn to try and pot commit me more since UTG had been a pretty aggressive player at the table to that point.

Thoughts on my play?

Edit: just fixed a typo that was bugging me.

No, there's lots of other ways to play poker.

If the turn is a diamond and he leads you can bluff raise. If the turn is not a diamond and he leads you can call and see what happens on the river.

If he does check to you on the turn I'm probably betting.

Betting this flop is kinda meh though because villain can checkraise you with something like jk or jq with a diamond and then you've got to fold. He's also probably calling with an ace as well.

As you can see how you played if he raises flop you have to fold, if he calls then you're gonna be checking alot on the turn except like the king of spades. Use your position to your advantage and don't turn KK into a bluff imo.
