I once read that with modern cars you actually don't need to change your oil. Something about the temperatures that newer cars engines run at pwns any impurities that used to taint old oil.

Has anyone heard about this? Anyone who knows a lot about cars want to comment on it?

FWIW, since I just don't give a shit I haven't changed my oil in like a year and a half and my car still runs fine (I think).

Whoever said that doesn't know what they are talking about. Your oil is there to catch the shaving and other junk that is given off your engine when it runs and to lubricate the engine so there is no metal to metal contact. The more crap that gets trapped in the oil the more it wears on the metal of the engine, the longer you go not changing your oil the more wear you get on the moving parts of your engine. The next time you get your oil changed look at the difference between what comes out and what goes in.

On top of it all the burning point of oil is lower than the burning point of cast iron so the oil will burn off before the stuff contained in the oil.

I've heard this before, basically the argument goes that the damage done to the environment by changing oil earlier is greater than the cost of the incremental wear on your car, up to a certain point, which is about 5k-6k miles on most cars.

if it's a honda, you never have to change it.. they're that good..

3000 miles is just Jiffy Lube propaganda. Kind of like the whole two months salary for an engagement ring bullshit.

Consumer Reports did a study years ago using NYC taxi cabs. Found out two things:

1. There's no difference between brands of motor oil, they're all the same

2. On average you don't have to change the oil until 7500 miles.

My Mercedes is 13k miles. Friend's Lexus is (I believe) 10k.

But by all means don't ever change the oil in your car. Your car will continue to run until it doesn't anymore.
