frustating 100nl hand

Postby Stelvask » Mon Jan 03, 2005 3:45 pm

This hand was really really frustrating. my opponent has just under a full stack. i have him covered.

he open min raises from EP. i'm in the BB with [As][Kd]. i reraise to $5. i don't like doing this out of position, but if he's got AA i expect him to reraise me and i'd like to know that sooner as opposed to later. he flat calls.

$10 pot.

[Ac][4d][9d]. ok. I lead out for $7. he flat calls.

$24 pot.

turn: [2c]. i lead out for $20. he flat calls again.

$64 pot.

river [5h]. i lead out for $30. he goes all in for about $35 more.

what's your play?

i normally don't like to play big pots with just TPTK, but at this point it was $35 more to win a huge pot. i ended up calling.
scroll down for results.

//EDIT: i took another look at the hand history, because i had posted this from memory. his river raise was was $50 more, not $35 more. i guess he had just over a full stack.

he had [3d][3c] and rivered the straight. of course he gave me shit about how i was a terrible player for calling his raise on the river yadda yadda yadda. i feel like i played this alright and just got unlucky at the end. still, anytime i lose a big pot i have to question how i did.
Thoughts?

Tough break. This guy raised in EP with 33 then proceeds to call a bet on the flop with basically nothing and on the turn with a gutshot. Keep this guy on your fish list man. Now for the river call, you are getting a bit better than 4-1 to call. So are you atleast 80% positive that he has you beat? If you feel 90% confident then fold. In other words, most of the time you are going to have to pay him off. I wouldn't worry too much. You'll get em next time.

I think you played it fine.

I had someone call with an underpair and hit a set twice this past week. Makes me wonder if that accounts for those times they call the flop bet and fold on the turn.

This ones a tough call, this is one of the reasons I really struggle playing AK, AK doesn't make you much more than TPTK, it only makes a striaght one way, and the chance of making two pair is the same small percentage as it is with any other 2 cards. The only small mistake I think you make is betting the river, he has cold called 2 bets in position, this to me usually means stregnth. With these two cold calls, he is either on a draw or flopped a big hand and is slowplaying it. The river is an obvious scare card, if you check the river and he goes all in for his remaining $80, it is an easy laydown for you. By betting you make it a much harder lay down. Though you opponant is a moron, he called approximatly 5% of his stack with two outs on the flop, than another 15% with a gut shot and a weak pair on the river. He is obviously not getting odds to make either call.

I also support checking the river. This is a classic situation where you won't gain anything by betting (i.e. you probably aren't getting called by a worse hand), but you can induce a bluff by checking. It really does look like he was drawing for the flush, maybe something along the lines of [Ad][Qd] or [Qd][Jd]. A lot of times a min raise in EP seems to mean some sort of medium pocket pair, but again, if he made a set on the flop or even the turn I'm pretty sure he would have raised you at some point. Nothing you can really do about this one, you know you are winning a lot of money against these types of players over the long run so no need to worry about it too much.
