NL quiz #1

Postby iceman5 » Tue Jan 04, 2005 12:01 pm

Lets do a little hand quiz. Your playing $1/$2 NL. This is your first hand so your in the BB with $200. There is a MP limper and the button limps.

MP always seems to have more than full stack when you sit down but hes losing more than 23 BB / 100 hands in the 1000 hands you have with him. He likes to play things like T7s. He will chase flush draws. he will bet flush draws and call raises. He will call a pot sized bet at the turn with a flush draw if the pot is small. (like if it got checked around on the flop)

The button youve never seen before. MP had more than a full stack. The button has a full stack
You have [Ts][8c]
Pot is $7. The flop comes [Jh][9c][7h]

You check. MP bets $6. Button calls $6. You check raise to $20 and they both call.
Pot is now $67. The turn is the [4d].
What are you thinking? What do you do?
I'll post further details developments in the hand after getting some responses.

Since you already check raised the flop, I think you need to lead out on the turn. Since the MP likes to chase flushes, he's probably chasing with hearts. The button could have anything, but I'd put him on top pair.

Lead out with a pot sized bet...
Patience is a virtue...

Bet the pot. However, if you think the flush chaser would pay even more since he loves to chase, I would think about overbetting the pot, like betting $80 or so.

I'm with briachek on this one - I want to sell a call to the chaser for as much as I can as long as it's at least the size of the pot.

I dont agree with overbetting the pot or wanting to win it right now. Why? Im ahead. I dont want him to fold. I just want him to pay to draw.
I agree with Mad Genius about betting 2/3 pot which is what I did.

The pot is now $67. I bet $45 and they both called.
Remember, the board shows [Jh][9c][7h][4d].

The river is the [Qc]. KT now beats me , but I doubt theyre dumb enough to be playing KT here. Its actually a great card for me. Maybe one of them has QJ. There are some guys dumb enough to have QJ here.

Whats your move now? The pot is $157. I have about $135 left and they both have me covered.

I would probably have bet the pot on the turn. Or at least the pot rounded down to to the nearest $10 or so. I don't want to overbet the pot unless I think he would call it with a flush draw. (I think this is a situation where it's best to bet the most amount that you think will get a call). But you have two players in the pot, and if possible you would like to keep them BOTH in. So between 2/3 and full pot is probably right.

On the river it's a decision between an all-in bet or a smaller bet. I don't see many hands that either player would raise a small bet with, so betting small to induce a raise is probably wrong. I think again you want to bet the most that you think would get called. At least one of them was probably on a flush draw, maybe with a pair as well. One of them might have two pair, and if so they probably won't fold now. I doubt either one has a set or you would have been raised on an earlier street. I think I'm just betting all-in and hoping for at least one call.

I think I'd shove in or bet $70, half my stack and just under half the pot.

i really have to rule out K10 here. if someone has that, then so be it and i'm paying them off.

Obviously your goal is to make the largest possible bet and still get called. with the third player in the hand though, this decision becomes even more difficult. Also, since the board now has a card above the jack, a player holding something like AJ or KJ may be less willing to pay off a larger bet. with the pot already this big, I'm either leading out for about $75 (1/2 pot) or going all in hoping that it looks weak, and maybe entising a call from KJ, QJ, J10, Qh9h, or AhQh. it's difficult to be able to decide which bet is going to be more effective against these two opponents, especially since this is your very first hand with one of them.

I'm leaning more towards the $75 bet though.

On the turn, I bet the pot. With no flush draw out I bet considerably less, maybe 70% of pot.

On the river I go all in and pray someone calls.
