on a terrible streak - 10 buy ins worth

Postby Stelvask » Sat Jan 08, 2005 12:02 pm

yep. you read that right.

in the last week, i've lost 10 buy ins. 3 at the 100nl tables, and 7 at the 50 nl tables.

three of them (two at the 100nl, and one at the 50nl) were set over set hands. two of which were back to back hands against the same person. bet he was happy.

two of them i got my stack in with a set against a draw of somesort - two straight draws, one flush draw, one bottom set vs. top two pairt - and lost each of them.

One of them i got in with the flopped second nut flush vs the nut flush draw. lost again.

the last one was a stupid call on my part.

but argh... i've just lost $650 in the last week. more than a third of my online bank roll.

Sorry. just felt like venting about my luck. this sucks.

Maybe you should take a day or two off then switch sites for awhile?? That's what I did when I hit my horrible streak on Party and I'm now reaping the benefits.

Ive been on streaks like that more than once. Its good that youre analyzing the big hands you lost. Based on the hands you posted, its just pure bad luck. Making only ONE large bad call during a streak like that is something to be proud of. Most people will make several bad calls that cost alot of money when they keep getting outdrawn (I speak from experience)

Streaks like this are the whole reason we need to maintain 20 buyins or more in our bankroll. Youve also done a smart thing by not being afraid to move down when youre bleeding money like that.

It'll turn around soon. It always does.

thanks for the words of encouragement.

I know the lucks going to turn around, it's just hard to deal with it all hitting at once. I'm glad i learned good BR management through UPF and BTP. Now i just need to work on quitting after losing a certain amount at any one time and i should be ok.

i'm dropping my normal 4 table program down to alternating between one and two - depending n various circumstances. I'm also going back to pretty simple ABC poker for a while - no limp/reraising AA. no open raising 76s, no bluffing (aside from open-semi bluffing), none of that fun stuff. just basic, boring poker. I did that today and i made back almost a full buy in over 200 hands at the 50nl tables today, though this was entirely through small/medium sized pots.

II'm setting my goal at one month to recover from my loses for my last week. i'm sure i'll wind up bragging about it on here somewhere if i can do it.

'till then... just wish me luck i guess.

I think if you play solid ABC poker and stick to the $50 tables for a while you will be just fine. I have been watching/mentoring a friend of mine who has been playing a bunch of $25 and $50 NL on Stars and the competition is predictably loose-passive, and in some cases weak-tight. As long as you don't hit any set over set type hands I really don't know how you can be losing over the long run. I remember you being a solid player from back when we played those $200 tables together, so I definately think you will be back where you were a while ago if you keep working at it. Good luck.
