Let KK go pre-flop... bad play?

Postby studcopter » Tue Jan 11, 2005 2:34 pm

I'm very new to online poker (only a few months) but I have done reasonably well, until hitting a big cold streak as of late. I say this because the cold streak has caused me to play "scared" (obviously a bad thing) and I think this affected the following play at the Party Poker $25 NL tables . I just sat down, so I'm sitting on about $33. 2 big stacks at the table, both behind me. They are in the blinds on this hand.

II'm in LP and dealt KsKd. 3 limpers in front of me, so I raise to $4.
SB re-raises all in for $78. BB re-raises all in for $125. Folded around to me.
I have very little read on either player, other than that this is the first hand that either have played since i sat down.
So I think for full amount of time, and finally fold my KK, assuming that one MUST have AA (obviously a bad assumption).
SB turns over AcQc and BB turns over AdJh.

I can't believe that they just did that, but I guess it IS party poker.
Cards come out, I would have caught trip kings, but SB cactches his flush (inconsequential though, I had great odds going into the hand).

So my question is... should I have known to call all-in before the flop? Or was this an acceptable laydown?

Thanks.

Just note that play for both players and move on but people willing to put that much on the line often one of them has AA. You can't just play any hand without reevaluating what is going on. I would have reluctantly folded too because i've learned my lesson the hard way in the past.

There were two factors that almost kept me in this hand.

The SB would be making a very questionable play (or one that indicates he had been taking some really bad beats) to re-raise all in for so much money with AA before the flop. He has to assume that everyone will fold to that kind of bet unless that have a very very premium hand, and so he isn't going to get his AA paid off.

The other reason is that BB took a really long time to re-raise all in over the top of the SB (almost the full time allowed). Because of that, I almost put him on QQ, because i figured if he had AA he wouldn't even think about it, just go all in so he could get heads up against the SB.

Still, it wasn't enough to keep me in (and it isn't exactly great reasoning to begin with).

JJ is an easy fold and even QQ I let go here pretty often unless both of these guys are total yahoos. KK I will take a little better than 2:1 on my money to gamble it up at a likely 4:1 advantage, especially for the amount of change you have on the table. $33 is simply too small to fold and is out of the question. If one of them has AA or suck outs so be it.

Increase the stack sizes and level of play to greater than party $25NL and I think an argument can be made for folding.

Peace,

Here is the next question...

Postby Danhdan » Wed Jan 12, 2005 10:29 am

Who is the bigger idiot? The guy who went all in w/ AJ suited or the guy who called a raise and all in w/ AQ?

I don't think I could have folded here at Party NL $25...and I would have stayed at that table long enough to takes some of the money those two were giving away. Sounded like a game where I would want AA preflop, and look for my sets to make the big money...and played incredibly tight in most other situations. The best thing about your laydown is that you will probably have better spots to put your money in...where you will have a set and they will have top pair...and they will almost assuredly call you on your monster hands.

Hope you made money in the later stages with those two...

How is the guy that went all-in with AQs the bigger idiot than the guy who went allin over the top with AJo? The AQs re-raise is dumb but not nearly as dumb as an overtop reraise of an allin with AJo. EIther way I think both of them are about as dumb as they get.

i agree with MG. Its one this to hugely overbet the pot with a decent hand, its another to reraise all in behind him with a hand that's even worse.

The reason AQ is the dumbest is because even though he has the strongest hand he doesn't know that. AJ said look at me I have (insert hand). Do you want to play against it for everything I got ($78.00)

AQ might have had good notes on AJ and knew that he over bet marginal hands and slow played premium hands. If that is the case then that explains why he wanted to play heads up. You can see that he wanted to play heads up by his re-raise instead of just calling.
