PLO8 reraise best play or try to get the bets in?

Postby Kuso » Sat Sep 10, 2005 8:01 am

I turn the nut low with a straight in a three-way pot. There is a two-flush on the board that I don't have the cards for. One player (a real LAG) gets all-in after I make a small raise. I can call and hope the guy behind me calls, or I can raise and make a high draw pay. Which would you do and why?

I would be tempted to re-raise that flop. If there's no flush draw on board I think it's a pretty clear re-raise.

On the turn I play it like you did, no sense letting your opponent see a weedy flush draw cheaply, or indeed (if he does have a draw) not charging him here because he'll not pay you off on the river.

Wow, there's no way in my mind that you can't reraise that flop. You have an uncounterfeitable nut low draw, so you are most likely WAY ahead of any other A2 hand because they most likely don't have a 5.

The times that you get quartered because a low hit but you didn't get an A or a 2 on the turn or river are more than offset by the times you will scoop. I think your fold equity is high enough that you can play this one fast.

First, let me make it clear that I was asking about the turn rather than the flop.

I called on the flop for two reasons:

1) the guy on my right is really aggressive, and i wanted him to do some betting for me on the turn. a pot-sized reraise on the flop might slow him down. this is also why i didn't btp on the turn. i had a fairly good read on this guy's aggressiveness that i was able to play in a way that extracted his entire stack. he jammed to almost anything other than a pot-sized bet, to which he often slowed down.

2) i also called on the flop in order to get the money in from the guy on my left. he might call $3 on the flop with some sort of a weak draw, but he dumps for a pot-sized raise. in fact, if the guy had a flush draw with a weak or no low draw, i wanted him to call on the turn, i just wanted him to pay for the privelege (i.e. have him call with incorrect pot odds). of course, if he had the nut low (with or without the flush redraw) he's calling whatever i bet.

JD, i'm too lazy to do the numbers right now, but i think that i am behind to a diamond flush draw (even non-nut) with A2. the A, 2, and 6 of diamonds are not clean for me, so i really only have 6 outs to 3/4 an A2. The A2 flush draw has at least this many outs (diamonds that pair the board beat him).

Regardless, I am not so afraid of getting quartered here... my main goal was to get maximum money in the pot with my opponents having improper odds. Just calling on the turn may have inspired the guy on my left to call, but I wouldn't have given him the levels of crappy odds I prefer. A $5 reraise ($16 or so to go) would have been ideal, but that would not have been a legal raise.
