Lately I have been playing a lot of PL O8 SNGs on FTP rather than NLHE SNGs. Much to my surprise, I have found a good amount of success early on playing them. These O8 games are at the $5.50 and $11 level, where I've played the majority of my NLHE SNGs as well. Here are some of the interesting differences between the two:
1) PL O8 is even more poorly played by the NLHE players who show up by accident or use the same strategy they would in NLHE games (i.e., hyper aggressive). These players make themselves known immediately at the table because they start out raising big time pre-flop, when any good O8 player knows that no hand is so powerful in a 9 handed game that they should start throwing chips around in a big way before the flop. The result is that by the time its 40/80 in blinds, there are 4-5 players left. I merely limp in with good hands, and peddle the nuts when I hit.
2) The players are generally friendlier (although I remain a jerk when I get sucked out as always), with more "regulars" playing every day. This leads to a more "fun" environment (although it helps that I'm cashing in 65% of them).
What's most interesting is that I've found that I enjoy playing PL O8 much much more than playing NLHE, so I have been incorporating more of these games into my poker playing time.
I guess what I'm getting at is that if you haven't played these before, give them a try, they are very enjoyable to me at least.
