Cloutier and McEvoy's Book??

Postby Zuccala » Sun Sep 25, 2005 3:39 pm

I know it is about tournament NL. But I heard it translates well for Low Limit NLHE. How is this so? I am considering buying it and I would just like to hear a lilttle more on the subject. Any information on this would help! Thanks

It basically says this "Don't call. Raise or fold. Calling raises is bad. I played lots of poker in Texas and won me lots of money."

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Get The Theory of Poker. Seriously.

if you want to cry in your sleep, i recommend Advanced Hold'em by Sklansky.

if you want to shoot yourself first, i recommend The theory of poker, by Sklansky.

NL Championship Hold'em is my favorite poker book, and an easy read. My poker career took off after that book.

Caffione's NL book is also good. A combination of those too is great.

When i read Theory of Poker I thought the first 60 or so pages were superb, but then it goes over the issues discussed the 1st 60 pages but with a lot more mathematical terror. I say it needs to be read, but yeah I did fall asleep a few times.

The Cloutier books quite good, somewhat tight, it's not clear what aspects he advises for cash game play as opposed to tourneys, as there's meant to be advise for both.

The Ciaffone and Reuben book is the best NL book I've read, it's the only cash game book for NL that makes you think a level or two beyond the 'what does my opponent have?' level, along with concepts such as pot control and the way certain actions need to made due to pot odds.

Thanks for the replies. I have already read both The Theory of Poker and Hold'em for Advanced players. So I think will go with Cloutiers book, then on to Ciaffone's. Thanks for the help!

Damn, you had to look way back to find this one. Anyway, I'll jump on the bandwagon and make a comment.

This book is the greatest book written by any poker player, ever.

It's all in the last 50 pages or so when Cloutier goes nuts and starts telling all these weird ass stories. "One time this guy robbed a game and then played in it the next day!" "One time this woman bet 30k on craps!" "This guy won at our poker game and then he and his wife were killed 20 years later!"

It's literally just a bunch of rambling stories that will make you think Cloutier has lost his mind. And of course, if you thought that, you would be right.

The actual strategy section of the book isn't too good, but the hand quizzes are OK. Also, half the book is Cloutier saying "Tom McEvoy would have done this, but I don't like that play" without giving a reason why.

HOH is where it's at.

Not a big fan of the Cloutier/McEvoy book. I don't care that TJ played NL Hold 'em in Shrevenport from 12-5 Monday thru Friday and again on Sundays. The McEvoy/Brad Daugherty book is MUCH MUCH better, and should be everyone's first read.

Just got done with The Theory of Poker - it's probably the best poker book ever written (now that I've actually read it from cover to cover), but is quite advanced and a beginner won't get much out of it the first time through and without some mileage under their belt.
