He went AI pre-flop with not much and managed to win the hand for $18.

I don't fault this play at all and I would like to have either hand but like yours better. However, when people play like this, you will experience more variance but that guy has no idea what he's talking about. Just sit back, wait for a good wrap hand or a good pair hand to hit the flop well and push. Don't overplay marginal hands though.

i really like your hand for this kind of family pot. His high-card outs were at least as likely (perhaps more) to be polluted than yours.

No reason to rag on your preflop call, JT98ss is a very strong hand and should pretty much never be folded in PLO.
