Who reraises the river?

Postby briachek » Thu Jan 20, 2005 8:45 pm

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $0.5 BB (10 handed)

UTG+2 ($21.75)
MP1 ($24.85)
MP2 ($43)
MP3 ($50.26)
CO ($41.65)
Button ($24.15)
Hero ($99.25)
BB ($68.15)
UTG ($37.45)
UTG+1 ($28.8)

Preflop: Hero is SB with [Jd], [Kh]. CO posts a blind of $0.75.
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, UTG+2 folds, MP1 calls $0.50, MP2 folds, MP3 folds, CO (poster) checks, Button folds, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($2.25) [9s], [Qd], [Th] (4 players)
Hero checks, BB checks, MP1 checks, CO bets $2, Hero calls $2, BB folds, MP1 folds.

Turn: ($6.25) [Ts] (2 players)
Hero bets $4, CO calls $4.

River: ($14.25) [Jh] (2 players)
Hero bets $5, CO raises to $10, Hero calls $5.

Final Pot: $34.25

Results in white below:
Hero has Jd Kh (straight, king high).
CO has 8s Qs (straight, queen high).
Outcome: Hero wins $34.25.

Who raises this river? Probably a situation that if its a bluff, he folds, if its not, i lose more money so I just call these situations? Also, what do you think of the turn bet? I thought it might kill the action and he would check behind me so this way, it made it look like I was buying it.

I wouldn't re-raise the river. The boat is a long shot, but like you said, in a lot of cases you are only going to lose more if you are beaten and probably not win more if you are ahead.
On the other hand, a hand like 10-9 or other 2 pair holding probably would have been more aggressive earlier in the hand with all the straight draws possible. Same probably goes for a set. If someone boated on you I would expect someone holding J-10 where they flop a pair and a straight draw then run to a boat on you.

Yeah I agree with Bob...def. wouldn't reraise this river. That full house is scary and most likely you are going to split anyway. That guy played his hand horribly..

I don't like your flop play. That flop is very likely to have hit in one way or another. I would lead out, hoping to get raised. Then you can re-pop or call and then get more in on the turn. The way the hand played out, I would just call the river. Boat is very possible, and with 4 to straight out he isn't calling a re-raise with something like two pair.

I flopped the nut straight on a rainbow board. I thought it there was any time to slowplay a straight, this would be it. The T on the turn messed up my play so I decided to make it look like I was buying it. When would you slow play a straight or do you really look for a checkraise on the flop or just lead out the flop pretty much every time?

The main reason that it is okay not to slowplay in this situation is the high coordination of the board. The board may be rainbow but Q-10-9 can hit a lot of players very hard. Hands like 10-J or Q-J have top pair with an open ended draw and they are likely to follow you if not play back at you. A hand like K-Q has TP with a strong kicker and might play back at you trying to protect his hand. Two pair is slightly less probable, but still possible. So really you are likely to get people to play with you even if you do lead out. Plus, you want to build that pot up, you only have 3 streets to get as much money with the nut straight as possible, and a check-raise might scare off people who would stay with you for a little bit if you lead out (check-raising indicates more strength than just a bet). You can certainly modify your bet size to try and suck people into the hand though. Maybe only bet half the pot on that flop.

I rarely slowplay, but if I was going to slowplay a straight , it would never be this one. If you going to slowplay a straight from the blind, do it when the flop is 864 and you have 75.

When the are so many broadway cards, its very likely someone will have 2 pair of top pair and a draw. You want to build the pot early in these situations.
