Books for No Limit Cash Games

Postby The A Train » Sun Sep 18, 2005 4:47 am

I am looking for books that are especially for No limit holdem cash games. I have read a lot of books on Hold'em but most seem to be for tournament play or for Limit cash games.
I play at the lower limits (currently $25 buyin tables). Are there any books aimed at this type of game and level?

Small Stakes Hold Em is about limit.

There is only one book you need. That is The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky. It's the greatest book on poker that ever has been and ever will be written. If you want to play Pot Limit Omaha, you could do so just by reading it. If you want to play NLHE, it will do the trick. It is THAT good.

Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.

Yes and no, IMO.

Yes, it is the best book on the game of poker I've ever read, and I think every serious poker player should own a copy.

No, I don't think it's the only book you need, especially when it comes to NL. Most of its examples are Limit, as the model is simpler (fewer options). NL-specific concepts such as pushing aren't covered.

Sklansky's working on a 2+2 NL ring games book that's described as being like TOP for NL. If true, that sounds irresistible.

You can find it on Amazon (please click through us!! :D), just type "scott harker" in as a query and it'll be the first result.

I really can't remember how I came across it. I remember it coming at me from nowhere, i.e. it didn't feature in the usual 'texas holdem' type search AFAICR.

It's a good one though, IMO. And the Amazon reviews seem to concur.

I also liked Bob Ciaffone's "How good is your pot limit hold'em". It's basically a compilation of B&M scenarios, giving you the profiles of all the players at the table, a description of the action (if any) so far, and points gradings for your decisions plus "now what if this had happened instead" type deviations. I found it great fun to do the exercises, and despite it being PLHE I think a lot of the things one learns are applicable to NLHE.

He also did one on PLO, I believe.
