Hey guys. (Initial starting hands question)

Postby k3nt » Thu Nov 24, 2005 11:25 am

Is it ok if I join the forum? I am a total newbie at Omaha. Please be nice to me.

One thing that always kept me far away from Omaha was confusion. Look at all those cards in your hand. How can you figure all those out and know which is a good starting hand?

I read through the Omaha chapter in SS2 last night for the first time, and it suggests that one way of thinking about Omaha starting hands is as 6 different hold 'em hands. If you like most of your hold em hands, then you'll like your Omaha hand. Is that a good way of thinking? Or ... how do you guys think about it?

If you have AA72 with no suitedness, then you have one outstanding hand and a bunch of crap. So it's a lot less good than most people think. Is that right?

Thanks.

Heads up all in pre flop its good, but thats about it. If there's any money left to go in post flop and you don't flop a set, you're not gonna be happy. Felonious_Monk wrote an article on starting hands for livepokerforum.com so you should definately check that out. The numbers run so close to each other that it's rarely incorrect to play a hand pre flop. The problem is that the hand that may only be a small underdog pre flop, is quite a bit trickier to play well post flop, so beware. It's definately easiest to start off playing fairly tight, but in PLO I really think you have a lot of room to splash around once you've gotten some experience.
