Good try or a way to get badly burnt?

Postby excession » Sun Jan 30, 2005 1:59 pm

Trying the UB 50c/$1 N tables (15BB/100 PT style up at the mo).

Here is a river bluff with junk I tried.

Was it a good idea?

Background is that I joined the table about 15 minutes ago and have about $54 (I bought in for $50 which was about average stacked - I tend to buy up to max if i really like the look of the GT+ stats, but here I was in 'wait and see' mode).

I have [Ah][4d] OTB.
Folded to OTB + 1 who limps (he is loose 41% flops 5% PFR. Passive post-flop 0.71 PFA - losing player $36 left)).

I put in a raise to $3.

BB calls, OTB+1 calls.

BB is also passive - Vp$iP 25%, PFR 0%, PFA 1 (i don't have enough hands on him to get a reliable WtSD%). He had $35 when the hand began..

The only big hands I saw him in was about 10 minutes before, where he pushed all in after limping with AJ and hitting J9x flop only to get called and lose to a set of nines - so he is probably feeling a bit tilty.

Flop is [Kc][Qs][7c]. (Pot $10)

Both check to me.

I bet half the pot to see if I can take it down. I would obviously drop to any re-raise.
BB flat calls.OTB+1 folds.

This confuses me - I have shown strength pre-flop and he most likely puts me on a K (maybe even AK) or a Q with good kicker. I think with the flush and str8 draws out there he would have re-raised for sure if he had AK or KQ. (Given that he pushed all-in with TPTK before and there is a flush draw on the board I see no reason to suspect slow-play).
So I tentatively put him on the flush draw, JT or K or Q with weak kicker. With my pre-flop raise he must put me on a strong hand that hit - say AK, AQ or even KQ.

Turn is [5s]. So far as I can tell - junk. Pot $20
He checks to me. Hmm.

If I check then it looks like I don't have anyhting (which i don't).
I decide to bet the minimum I can get away with to maintain the lead in the hand, with the idea of betting out again on the river if the draws miss. I did consider betting more but if he called a 1/2 pot bet last round he will likely call up to a 3/4 one here and $15+ is too much escalation for me here on a pure bluff.

I bet $5.
He flat calls again. I am almost certain now that he is on a draw of some sort or maybe a Q..

River is [6d]. Pot is $30.

He has $25 left. I have $44.

I bet $13.

Stupid play or the best I can do when overplaying junk against passive players on the button?

This guy is so passive post flop, I think he has a king. He's not smart enough to push you back. I say he has like KJ or KT s00ted -- good enough to call the preflop raise with in BB, and he's not gonna go away once he hits the flop.

This guy sounds exactly like how I played until about a month ago. He's not reraising his top pair, because he's scared YOU have TPTK or wired aces. But he knows you were OTB and might have just tried to steal the blinds, missed the flop and then tried to steal the pot, so his Ks are good enough to win if that's the case.

So what happened? I'd be interested to know if this dude has my old mentality.
If you're gonna play trash, expect it to get taken out.

(I hate those people who quote themselves, but that's one of my original lines).

He folded and I took down the pot, so i never got to see what he had.

I think you are right - I may have bluffed a calling station and got away with it here.

Individually I don't think any of the choices I made were dreadful, they just backed me into a very uncomfortable corner.

If I had to guess his hand it would be [Qc][Tc] or a JT (not clubs) btw..although really I have no idea what he had

Excession,

Congrats on taking down the pot, but I think the best hand won. Your opponent was drawing with TJ or 2 clubs and missed. Your bet won the pot that you likely would've won with a showdown. The greatest value in your bet comes from him making a small pair with his flush draw which he might have folded to your river bet.

Be careful in these type situations, often times you will see a very weak top pair or second pair call you all the way down. In those cases, it is better to turn your cards over without the river bet if you have an Ace. If you hold baby cards it is much more likely the river bet would get a better hand out.
