King high flush on a four to flush board

Postby AA.com » Mon Jan 31, 2005 4:57 pm

Paradise Poker $50 nl

A slew of limpers when button ($40) raises to $2. Im ($75) in the bb with [Ks] [Kc] and rereaise to $6. UTG ($65) limper calls as does the button.

Flop: [As] [3c] [9c] $20

I moan and check with intention of folding to a bet, but suprisingly it gets checked around. Something doesnt seem right. Meanwhile, at another table, i turn a boat as my opponent turns a flush, so being preoccupied, I check the turn card [8c] (in hindsight, I shouldve bet). UTG bets $10, button folds, i call (???). River comes [6c]. Again i check and UTG fires out $30 into the $40 pot. Ive got the K high flush but the only card on the board not a club is the Ace making it very easy for UTG to hold the [Ac]. I fold and he shows [Qd] [Jh] for the pure bluff. I got what i deserved for misplaying the hand so terribly (i think i should have put UTG on [Ac] and folded to the turn bet or bet out on turn after it was checked around). I just couldnt convince myself that neither opponent held a big ace being as they called a fairly large rereaise preflop.

Anyway thoughts on how to properly play the situation and does anyone close their eyes and call the river bet?

Thats a tough hand and mo matter what you did , it couldve easily been the wrong thing. I say, forget this hand except for one thing.

Next time youre in another hand where you raise and that same guy calls. Trap him.
You already know he'll bluff if you show weakness, so let him bluff you when you have a real hand.
If you had AK with that same flop, check the flop. Or bet the flop and check the turn if he calls and get ready to call his river bluff....or raise the river when he bets it.

What really hurt you is your passive play, you were agressive before the flop (as you should have), but when you check(call) on every street it just reeks of weakness, and in the meantime it provides you with no information on the strength of your opponent.

If you are going to re-raise with KK, you should commit yourself to betting the flop no matter what comes on the flop. You'd be suprised how often you still have the best hand. I've stolen a lot of pots by betting the flop after the initial raiser checks it to me because an A came on the flop.

But you've checked the flop because you had a big hand at another table - Since your out of position, Checking the turn, with the intention of checkraising isn't such a bad play- it will tell you real quick if your beat.

By the way, based on the preflop action, I wouldve reraised to more than $6.
