$1/2 NL at Stars.

I'm in the BB with [9c][7c]. EP limps, CO limps, SB completes and I check. EP has just under $200, and I have him covered.

Pot is $8. Flop comes [9h][7s][2s]. SB checks and I lead for $6. EP raises to $20. Folded back to me. At this point, what range of hands do you put EP on, and what is my best move? He just joined the table so I don't have a read. I will offer my thoughts after I've read a few responses.

I say he's got TT or JJ — wanting to drive you out and he's putting you on a flush draw.
If you're gonna play trash, expect it to get taken out.

(I hate those people who quote themselves, but that's one of my original lines).

Has EP limped with A rag soooted before?
I put him on [As] + [3s] or [4s] or [5s] .
Is it also possible that he has [8s] [Ts] ?

After reflection, How would you play a set of 2's?
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

This is tough not knowing how your opponant plays. My first instinct is that he is playing !10/10 or JJ and didnt want to raise in EP with it, now he sees the flop he wants and thinks his overpair is strong. A set is also a possibity here a limp from ep is a pretty standard play for 22, 77, 99. The third is the play that you and I have discussed a couple of weeks ago, he very well could be playin Ax spades and be rasing for a free card. Depending on stack depths I would reraise here and see what he does.

His all-in overbet says semibluff on flush and/or straight draw.

With the pf limp, assuming he's decent, I put him on [Js][Ts] or [As][Js].

If he has the set, he sure played it deceptively and got very lucky to catch such a strong opponent's hand on that weak flop. More power to him I guess.

Mad Genius,

I am willing to lose my stack here. The hands you are concerned with are sets and A9s; but the way he is playing the hand smells like an overpair to me. He may draw out on you, but go ahead and get the money in with the best of it. No way I fold to his last bet; way too much money in the pot to make a laydown to a naked flush draw (which is still a possibility)

I agree with your play because I also think he has an overpair (or less), BUT...I would play a set of 2's the exact same way hes playing this hand.

I just dont think thats what he has. I call the all in.

It's good to see that everyone seems to be pretty much on the same page. I also didn't feel like he had a set only because the huge all-in re-raise seemed out of place. As I said before, most people try to extract as much as possible with a set and I just didn't feel like he would make a big raise and then a huge all-in re-raise. A semi-bluff was possible but having seen how attached people get to their overpairs, I really thought he was trying to protect his overpair.

I ended up calling, turn and river were blanks, and I took it down. He mucked. I checked hand history and he had KK. I've always said that if you miss a limp-reraise with AA/KK you have to be prepared to fold it on the flop. Clearly this guy wasn't gonna do that.

Wow, did he butcher THAT hand :D

I would also call the all-in; I figured a hand like T[s]8[s] or probably more likely a pair of Js or Qs. I really don't see it's very likely you're behind here.
