Help with Odds stuff

Postby TheZodiac » Mon Jan 09, 2006 9:46 am

First, I love playing Poker but suck at math and poker odds stuff. I want to improve this side of my game, Is there a program I can use or a chart avail????

I played this hand @ Party and the loser (A.Magi) gave me grief for a bad call. I believed I had enough outs to make the call but he said the odds were wrong, can someone coach me on this hand did I misplay this badly?

Thanks

Two Points:

1) On the turn the pot is 240 and the bet by Amagi is 175. So the pot is 240+175= 415 and its 175 for you to call. Thats pot odds of 2.3:1 (which is 415/175).

You have 9 flush outs (9 clubs left in the deck) and 4 straight outs (the 4 fours left in the deck). But one of the 4s is the 4[c] so its already counted in the 9 flush outs. Total outs left are 9+4-1 or 12 outs. 12 outs are a 2.8:1 odds to hit with 1 card left.

So the pot is laying you 2.3:1 but your odds of hitting are 2.8:1 so NO you don't have pure pot odds to call. You want your chance of hitting to be greater than the odds the pot is laying you.

2)However, there are implied odds. That's how much you can win of you opponent's stack if you hit your hand. You're not just winning the pot as it is when you call his bet, you have the chance to raise with a winning hand and take more money. As you played it, you didn't raise.

With implied odds, I'd say you are pretty close to even to call or fold. However, if you are going to call, YOU HAVE TO RAISE to make it worth your while. In the hand, you hit your backdoor flush (hard for him to give you credit for) and you just called his raise on the river. You have to raise there. I might even push there. You have a monster hand thats fairly well hidden and your opponent seems content to fire away on each street. Raise.

Hope this helps.

Tim
