poker fun or not

Postby cholo loco » Mon Jan 31, 2005 8:02 am

adam and i had been discussing this in another thread and i was wondering what other pro/semipro players thought of it.
i contested that not only was poker fun but that if it wasnt your time is almost certainly better spent elsewhere. authors such as sklansky have written about this in more detail. if you are intelligent enough to beat mid-high limit poker for a good amount then you are intelligent to do something else that would make more money.
so dont play poker right? wrong you just shouldnt play if you dont enjoy it.
in the short term poker may offer more earning potential and i suspect this is part of the allure.
also, i do agree that poker should be treated like a business, a business you enjoy.
just curious as to what others think and if many of you really dont enjoy what you do.
btw i enjoy adams posts and do not mean for this to be taken as anti adam in any way

choco,
you said:
"but if you think you could not make more money doing another job than playing that low you will not fair well when you move up. "

I'm unsure as to what you mean by that statement. The only reason I'm playing this low limit is because my bankroll is not high enough to live off of and move to the next level. I'm not screwing with my bankroll this time around, I've learned my lesson.

Anyway, I'm making $25-$35 hour depending on the month on .50/1.00 NL. I don't have a degree, and my job experenice is limited to retail and some computer stuff. I'm not gonna find a job in NC that pays that much for my limited qualifications.

And why wouldn't I fair well when I move up? I've played 1/2 and 2/4 NL before and beaten both. My bankroll is my limiting factor right now. Granted you can't expect to win everyday, but that's poker.

Maybe I misunderstood what you said? lol. i dunno. help me out here.

If you're gonna play trash, expect it to get taken out.

(I hate those people who quote themselves, but that's one of my original lines).

i think that the people running this site are making a mistake if they use "enter at your own risk" to mean adam can do whatever he wants, make up any rules he wants, and that unlike any other place poker is discussed on the web, will not be debated.
the purpose of forums is to debate things, and share knowledge, at least to me that is the purpose. (they did not say this, another poster did)
that is all i was trying to do was debate something like people do all the time on poker forums, and adam gets all huffy saying others shouldn't be able to start non question threads (not to mention the fact that i was asking a question:do you agree or disagree)
i also think that the semantics may have confused my point. when i say fun i mean, something i really enjoy and take pride in doing well. not a knee slapping good time. i mean concentrating intensely, watching for minutiae and playing the best you can and getting satisfaction out of it. not flirting with the waitress (well im not always perfect but i try) watching the game and reading a magazine fun, but something i enjoy just as much.
if things that are hard were not fun then i would agree with adam but theres no correlation between difficulty and enjoyment to me.
if adam really dosent enjoy the game and plays just for money i think his time is severely misspent. he is basically always broke give or take a couple of grand, and the game causes him untold stress. and if he dosent enjoy it why would he dump so much of his free time into these, by his own account, frustratingly non profitable endeavors. i know he will tell us about some glory days but if he takes a hard look at himself he will see that poker is not making him rich, so perhaps he does enjoy the game a little bit.
anyways we alll started playing poker for a reason and it wasnt initially the financial allure. i think the people who say they dont enjoy the game would play better if they did try to enjoy it more. i always play better when im enjoying the game.

Unless Adam is defamatory or tremendously out of line, he can do what he likes in his area.

He does tend to bite if you do something he considers to be out of line.

As phatlad says, we put a strapline on Adam's forum section for a reason.

A lot of people don't like, dislike or even hate the ATE persona. However a lot of people DO like the style of his writing and/or can see valid points in his posts. This area allows people that don't appreciate Adam to avoid him, and provides a focal point for those that do.

Choco, I can see that you feel maligned/upset about Adam's comments. Knowing Adam I am quite sure he would not have wanted to egregiously offend.

But my view personally is that you have over-reacted and now find it hard to let go of the issue. I suggest you avoid this section of the site in future or make your peace with Adam via private message.

Im not going to comment on this thread other than to say....PLEASE....put some punctuation and breaks in your sentences and paragraphs. That hurt my brain trying to read that.
