Early on the PLO8 multis are not much different than a typical Party NLHE multi. You'll have a lot of gambling going on and very few fancy play opportunities. I probably have a vpip of under 12 in the first hour of most of these - you really have to wait for a solid multiway hand before you want to get too involved in a pot.

That being said, there are some great opportunities to build a serious stack early on if the cards come your way. A lot of guys will push with a naked low and there will be plenty of 3/4ing chances. If you don't catch cards early on, don't fret, you'll have chances to make up for it later on the weak calling stations that were getting lucky in that first hour.
