$25 PLO cash game hand for review

Postby kdiddy33 » Mon Feb 13, 2006 11:04 am

Sorry I didn't save the actual hand. I have to recreate it.

Hero has [Ac] [Kc] [7d] [8s]

I limp in for 25 cents. A few other limpers.

Flop comes: [4h] [5h] [6s]

action checks to me and I bet the pot from late position and one guy flat calls - screams out to me obvious flush draw.

turn card is [2c], obviously no help

I bet the pot, which is now $12 and the guy flat calls again!!! This flush draw is so obvious it makes me want to puke - the problem is, he's got $60 and I started with $25 and don't have a great read on him. Unless he is a complete moron, he would HAVE to know that I have the nut straight to be betting like that.

river comes a [2h], which now F's me up completely.

he is first to act and checks to me. Now, I do not bet here, even though I have been pounding the pot at him. Why? Because, if he's stupid enough to chase a flush draw without the proper pot odds, he's stupid enough to call my pot size bet (which would basically be my stack on the off chance that I didn't hit a full.

Or, did I make a mistake here and miss an opportunity to take advantage of the paired board when he checked to me. My gut instinct said he would call the bet anyways because he is very likely to be an inbred tool box with daddy's credit card.

Thoughts please? How do you play these hands any different? I feel like I did my job to take away his pot odds and make him pay to see cards. Is there more that I could have done??? thanks.

Briachek,

you really fold that hand pre flop for a 25 cent limp?

You have the nut flush draw on a club flop and a decent straight draw that won't hold up to a tool box that will call you down to the river on a flush draw :)

Seriously though, I don't think that's that bad of a hand for a limp. It was this time of course. Do you only play hands where all 4 work together and fold the rest? Unfortunately, the stats on Full Tilt don't allow me to show my VPIP numbers, so I can't track them. Perhaps I need to consider tightening up my limping standards.

yes, i usually fold that. I would be much happier if it was [Ac][9c][8d][7s]

Don't go by my standards though, i'm really tight with hands like that and a little looser with hands like JJxx. My vpip is about 15%.

I actually agree with Brian on this one I really dont like AKs in PLO. The problem is if you make the flush it is going to be hard to get paid off. In PLO usually the only way to get your flushs paid off is but the king high flush since the king is alreayd in your hand it makes it harder to get paid off. I also prefer the A987 hand that Brian talks about because it makes more open ended draws. With AK the only way top have an OOSD is AK10 or AKJ and in that case you are killing your outs because atleast one is in your hand.

I guess that makes sense. I think at the end of the day, the more outs you have the better, so A987 would be better than AK87.

What I meant to say is, that there is no shame here in check-calling the flop (if it is just one bet, and not a raise) and then either check-folding the turn if you believe your opponent to be reasonable or else going to the river and hoping for the best. This is of course just one possible line.

When you flop a straight without many redraws it is often better to check-call the flop since it leaves your opponent guessing whether you have the same hand, or a combination draw. That way he will often be the one making a mistake on the river.

And yes, as overly tight as Brian is, he is probably right here that this is usually a fold. Not because an A-high flush wants to be paid by a K-high flush (in order for this to happen you typically need a flopped flush over flush) but because there are not enough flops that you can hit hard.

Another good point here for the check call on the flop, is there is always a chance you are getting freerolled here. Say you raise the flop here and villian goes all in, you are going to call you have the nuts, but if the villian has the same straight and a pair he is freerolling you for a full stack. Or worse if he has a flush draw to go with his straight he is in great shape.

He's in LP. I think you have to bet this flop. For sure you have to bet the turn against one oppo. I guess in the right spot against the right oppo OOP on the turn you might try a check-raise given there's 4 to a straight on board.
