AQ EP with rag flop.

Postby asdfman » Tue Feb 15, 2005 8:56 am

I'm in ep early on in a tourney (15/30) blinds. I have about 3k stack, which is about average. I pick up AQs UTG and call, someone minraises i call, 3 people in the pot. Flop comes down 227 rainbow, turn is another 7, river is 5. no flush draws. Button bets 150 into a 120 pot, i fold, mp calls. Button shows king kicker to take it down. Should i have called here?

I would have bet the turn for half the pot. If I get re-raised I let it go. Sounds like a loose table if they are calling raises with K high.

It was raised pre-flop so the BB limping with 72o isn't going to happen. 227 was no help after the flop. The second 7 was no help either. Your betting tells them you have a pair now they have to decide if they want to chase or not.

3000 at the 15/30 level should be well over average. Average should be only a couple 100 higher then your starting stack at this level. So it was real loose it sounds like.

If it came down exactly like that - no I wouldn't call the river.

However, I'm not real fond of the way you played the hand in general.

First off, I know that some would disagree with me here, but I would lead off with a standard raise UTG with AQs (if it was offsuit, I'd probably call). If someone raised me after that, I'd likely call.

If I simply called on the flop (and called the min raise) - I would probably check through the flop (as you did), but then I would bet on the turn. This is a value bet (because anyone with a small pocket pair almost has to fold as well as anyone with a high card other than an ace. The only way you don't take it down here is if someone has a deuce or a seven - and that's just not likely (in my opinion).

However, if I had neglected to bet on the turn, I'd check/fold the river because there's not enough in the pot to go chasing...
