PLO8 $10 Hand, How Bad Did I Really Play It?

Postby WVTriker » Fri Mar 03, 2006 1:44 pm

I'm on the button in this hand. Seat 1 has only been in the game a couple of hands and I've not played him before. The rest of the table I felt like I had a pretty good read on.

[Omaha H/L] (0.05|0.10 Pot Limit - Cash Game) Real Money

- seat 1 with $9.15
- seat 2 with $3.89
- seat 3 with $10.76
- seat 4 with $8.82
- seat 5 with $3.43
- seat 6 with $2.00
- seat 7 with $11.46
- WV_Triker sitting in seat 8 with $7.47 [Dealer]
- BB sitting in seat 9 with $27.30
- SB sitting in seat 10 with $1.64

posted the small blind - $0.05
posted the big blind - $0.10
** Dealing card to WV_Triker: King of Spades, Jack of Clubs, 10 of Clubs, Jack of Hearts
seat 1 called - $0.10
seat 2 folded
seat 3 folded
seat 4 folded
seat 5 called - $0.10
seat 6 called - $0.10
seat 7 called - $0.10
WV_Triker called - $0.10
SB called - $0.10
BB checked

** Dealing the flop: Jack of Diamonds, 7 of Hearts, 9 of Spades
seat SB checked
seat BB checked
seat 1 bet - $0.20
seat 2 folded
seat 3 called - $0.20
seat 4 - $0.20
WV_Triker raised - $1.20
SB folded
BB folded
seat 1 raised - $2.20
seat 6 folded
seat 7 folded
WV_Triker called - $2.20

** Dealing the turn: 4 of Clubs
seat 1 bet - $5.50
WV_Triker went all-in - $5.17
seat 1 shows: 8 of Spades, 8 of Hearts, 10 of Hearts, 6 of Spades

** Dealing the river: 3 of Clubs
seat 1 wins $15.54 from the main pot

On the flop I didn't really think he had a straight when he re-raised me. On the turn I still thought he was drawing or had 2nd set. Obviously, I was wrong.

I have no problem with your play. Even if you know he has the made str8 you have a good number of outs that makes it worth a call. FWIW, he played it fine as well, but without any redraws on his end it's the type of play that will bite him in the ass quite often. He has no low worth drawing at either, but against the same made str8 (if that's what you had) his 68 might be good enough for half a pot sometimes.

I also flat call his flop raise there, no sense in reraising at that point, you want to see the turn cheaply.

That's not a hand you want to play from EP or even MP unless it's a loose game, but from the button I'll call it, and I'd be pretty happy about the flop, you just didn't get any help from the deck.

This is probably a good example of the flopped str8 conundrum in PLO8 - if the best hand you can hope for is the one you flopped, you are in much worse shape than you realize. Trade the K in your hand for an 8 and he is dogmeat.

i'm sorry but i don't like your play at all. There is only one low card so its unlikely he's pushing a marginal high with a low draw so with a made straight out there, I know he has the straight. Your flop raise is in question because of the straight possibility but I play plo high so I expect the nut straight to almost always be out there. When you raise and he min reraises you, there should be no doubt he has T8 for the straight. If we assume he doesn't have any of your boat outs, he has at least 1 ten which is a straigh out so you have 12 outs for the river. You are getting 2:1 on your money which isn't enough. Fold the turn but I would probably not even raise the flop.

Bri, in PLO high then the chance of that str8 being flopped is much higher than it is in PLO8. Sevens thru tens are not ideal PLO8 cards. At the $10 level you might see some, but even there most players know to drop hands with them.

When flopping top set on that type of board how can you not raise the flop? You can make an argument for folding to the reraise (although I rarely would here because there's a good chance that you are up against a lower set as well as a str8), but how else do you play this flop?

i might call to see how he plays the turn. If he doesn't have much, he's folding or reraising if he has it. In this case, i would call the reraise since its a min reraise and you have odds. However, if i call the flop and he still mins the turn, i would go from there. Some people min the nuts (stupidly like this guy thinking its a great hand that can't be beat) while some min a draw, like if he had QT for the straight draw. Once he min reraises the flop, he's got T8 barring a read that he's a moron that will do that with 2 pair or a set on a dangerous board.

Therefore, on the turn, you don't have enough outs to continue so I fold.

I don't like it.

Flop
I flat call. I don't want to play a big pot with this hand, and with 3 players in ahead of you, you are getting good odds to fill up. You have position so keep the pot small and see what seat 1 does on the turn. You have to call the min-reraise but you should have a sinking feeling.

Turn
You aren't getting odds for a call because you have to put him on the str8. He bet the flop, then re-raised you, and lead the turn. Unless he is a total manic he isn't doing this with second set.
