Call reraise with big wrap?

Postby briachek » Sun Feb 20, 2005 4:39 pm

Converter isn't working fully so I'll comment through the hand with important info.

Party Poker (7 handed) Party Poker (7 handed) Party Poker (7 handed)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Js], [Kc], [Th], [Qd].
4 folds.

I raise it to $2 after 3 limpers to me. The SB raises it to $8 total. One limper calls. I have a full stack, limper is slightly lower and SB has me covered by a couple bucks. Do you always call here? What if there wasn't a limper, do your do anything besides call and look for a good flop?

Flop: [Ts], [9h], [Jc] (3 players)

Perfect flop. About $19 in pot and I have $17. Its checked to me, and there no question, I go all in. SB goes all in and limper calls.

Turn: [6h] (3 players)

River: [5h] (3 players)

I hope for no back door flush draw and see the chips slide my way.
SB had AAQ2 ds and limper had AT94ss.

Any comments? I'm really passive preflop in omaha (I'm aggressive in HE) and I'm probably limping with a lot of raising hands. This is a pretty standard play? I knew exactly what the SB had so I just hope for a good flop and move on if I miss?

Outcome: [/color]

Anyways, I'm guessing about 50 bucks? Or is it 25? Any case, with one limper calling isn't too bad here. You figure to have a hand it'll be very easy to get away from, and if you do hit there's a good chance you can win a very big pot. I'd prefer it if you had some suits but there are plenty worse hands to call with than that. $6 into a $20 flop I can't see a good reason to not at least take a look at the flop. I like these high wraps, if you hit a draw you know you either have a big wrap with enough outs to call a pot sized raise, or two pair plus an open ender. Anything else you fold, of course, but there's enough cards out there to make it workable.

Although just about 5 minutes I received AKJT at stars, found KJ5 rainbow on the flop, re-raised a weak leader and lost a $120 pot as he had KK  ... But mostly that's not going to happen

Obviously on the flop your hand plays itself. Good job, and nice pot. And get both those guys on your best friends list... Although I know from experience, on the right tables, people who'll call a pot sized bet with 3 outs seem to be very common in omaha!

Its $25 PLO on Party. I'm haven't moved up yet. Now that I've learned and pretty confident on what hands are playable, I have to work on what is really raisable and what I can call a raise or reraise with. I haven't played too much PLO recently because I've been playing limit HE for a while.

You lost $120 by playing top two pair and inside straight draw. Isn't that a little loose?

No, I lost about $50 playing top two pair and an inside straight draw lol. I was on the button, and had AKJT suited to the ace. A few limpers to me, and I raised it up (this is $100PLO so I think I raised to about $5). There were 4 callers. Flop came KJ5 rainbow. SB checked, UTG bet about $8 into a $25+ pot. This usually suggests a draw, so at this point I have him very solidly on something like ATQ; this tends to be right a vast amount of the time at Stars, the players are pretty passive and also quite predictable, this player certainly had been weak leading draws and non-nut hands for some time so I was 95% sure he had a draw. As I have several of the drawing outs covered (one T, one A and the Q gives me the nuts with a redraw) and as two of the other 3 players passed when the bet came to me, I decided I could get most of this player's stack in (he had something like $60 at the start of the hand) so I made the maximum re-raise. As it comes back to him he puts his remaining $10 or 15 or so into the pot, I call and he has KK. I don't find my Q and he rakes the pot. It may have been closer to $140 in fact but I think I only lost about $60 on it.

In my opinion this game is very situational. It is certainly fine to suggest that losing a big pot on a hand as weak as two pair is bad in omaha, but to some extent it could be a bit lazy to do so... I think I make a lot of my money on this game by being able to read the betting patterns of online players in the fairly straightforward games I play and making the right decision. If he had a draw here, as I was 95% sure he did, I'm a fairly significant money favourite. It does indeed look a little maniacal to make plays like this, but I stand by it because I make a lot of money with this style and the odd setback, whilst frustrating, is par for the course when you're trying to push fairly marginal edges and judgement calls.

Anyways, thats my take on it :D flame at will
