I am always at a loss what to do in these situations. What is the proper line to take when X is a mid card and larger than Y?

you flopped the nut boat with some overs for protection. However, it is very vunerable as any 8, J, Q, or A kills your hand. Play it fast and get the money in just as you did and hope for the best. This becomes even trickier if you have the same hand and the flop is TT2.

i don't think that there's much to dread here. given that you have overs, the worst case scenario is that you are both holding the same boata with redraws to higher boats. that's poker.

oops... i see now that's what happened.

anyway, i agree with bri that it gets trickier when Y is lower.and/or you don't have overs.

also, on a side note, i fold this hand preflop. maybe if it was 4 to a suit, i might limp but with 4 hearts in your hand and not even to the nuts and a decent amount of holes in it, just fold.

well it depends. I often bet out and if i get raise and have all 3 cards as overcard outs, i will often call and see a turn. If one of my cards is an ace, like TJQA on TT2 board, i might just push thinking that even if he had T2 or 22, i have plenty of outs and he might just be testing me with a T to see how much I like my hand.

If the board comes KKT and you have something like AKJ8 and then the turn is an 8, its read dependent as you could have him slaughtered or behind a slowplayed KT. Trips is the trickiest situation IMO.
