Most Messed Up Final Hand

Postby EscapePlan9 » Wed Jul 13, 2005 9:11 pm

UB $5 SNG. I'm against a fairly tough and aggressive player. We both have nearly identical chip stacks at the end, him a couple hundred ahead.

When heads up and with similar stack sizes, I sometimes like to limp in with some moderate hands as well as monster hands (I'm usually raising 2.5-3x BB though). I'm pretty sure he caught on to the limping with moderate hands part. I never showed down my hand when I had a monster and limped.

I limp in with KK. He min-raises me, I raise 2x that back, he goes over the top, and I push all-in. He calls and I'm delighted. Then he turns over, you guessed it, AA! I couldn't believe the terrible luck I had there. I'd need a miracle king!

The flop comes 4, 6... KING! I'm in the lead and now he needs a REAL miracle. The turn comes a blank. The river? AN ACE! I couldn't believe it!

It was bad enough we're headsup and I have KK while he has AA. Then I get lucky and make trips. Then he gets EVEN luckier and hits his trips with two cards to come!

AGH!!!

On another note... would any of you actually have folded KK here? It never crossed my mind. I always play KK like I have the best hand when we're short-handed and ESPECIALLY heads-up. On a full table... I'd still probably play it's the best hand. Let's say someone raises, I re-raise, and am re-raised back. I'd probably call and see a flop. If it isn't something like 3 suited cards (not of my suit) or an A, I'd probably check-raise a large amount (all-in if short-stacked, of course).

Even if I called here, I would have hit trips on the flop. I probably would have check-called him to the river, letting him waste away his chips to my monster. Even if he hit an A, he would have needed AA to beat me, which I would never put him on when I have trip Kings. So really... there was no way I could have done anything in this hand. Even if I pushed all-in on the flop, he'd probably call with his overpair.

Unless I folded pre-flop...

Is it possible to fold KK pre-flop heads-up? I would be afraid the gods of poker would strike me dead.

With better players, I usually assume a re-raise all-in (unless shortstacked) would not mean AA or KK. Why would you want everyone to fold to your monster hand? Maybe AK or QQ at best would justify the all-in. So easy call if someone pushes all-in and you have KK in that situation.

Now with the less experienced players... some of them will do a HUGE raise or HUUUUGE re-raise (all-in) with AA or KK just hoping to be callled. They must feel disappointed when they only pick up 80 chips with their monster.
