AQ in the BB on the first hand

Postby GodlikeRoy » Tue Jul 26, 2005 2:35 am

This happened to me about 10 minutes ago at the start of a Party $10 + $1 Sit and Go.

I get dealt AQo in the BB. UTG folds, UTG + 1 minraises to 30, it folds back to me. I call for an extra 15. The flop comes A85 rainbow. I check, UTG + 1 bets 80, i call. Turn comes a 6 completing the rainbow. I check again, UTG + 1 raises all in. Is calling the right move here?

I'll post the result and what he had later, but i'll say that i did make the call. I've only recently starting playing sit and goes and this is my 15th or so, so any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I agree with Scarface, reraise with it preflop to find out how badly he wants to play the hand and also to take control of the pot. Calling from the small blind leaves you with a huge positional disadvantage, so you have to have an idea what you might be up against.

That said, a lot of people will defend the call in order to see a cheap flop. But even so, there's no excuse for just calling the bet on the flop. You've got top pair with a pretty decent kicker. What more do you want?

at a $11 SNG, if you are capable of an ROI of 40%+, it would be a good fold preflop.

Obviously, if your ROI is lower, you should be less risk averse early.

I hate AQ so folding preflop out of position seems really weak/tight but that is how you often have to play at the beginning of a SNG. That said, I would probably would have called preflop but I'm leading or check raising that flop to find out where I stand. I go from there but I don't want to commit too many chips to this pot if he's still calling. It would be different if you were in position.

Generally speaking, I play this hand exactly the MVP suggested---HOWEVER, you guys have any comments on playing it different at Party VS PStars---At Stars, you get 1500 TC to start, and I tend to be "slightly" more aggressive the first couple hands I play, but I think you can make a case for folding with the smaller starting stacks at Party...Any comments??

I never consider the Party structure when I'm thinking about these things. But, yeah, probably not a bad fold at all in a Party SnG.

But if you're talking Stars or UB or most places with reasonable blind structures, I reraise preflop just to put a decision on him. If I lose those chips, big deal, still have plenty of time to recover.

In either case, I don't much like a call though I'm not adamant against it.

The flop, however, is a different story, no matter the circumstance. You have to bet there, I think.

I think at Party, it's a fold... At Stars or UB... I'm not so sure about a reraise PF... What happens when he calls and the exact same situation happens...? He minraises to 30, you REraise to 90 or so... Flop hits an ace... You bet 150, he raises...??? He calls??? What do you do...

A lot of my experience comes from playing cash games, where it's VERY dangerous calling raises w/ hands like AQ and KQ... Hands that are VERY easily dominated... But, that being said, I'd break my own rules anyway, and would lead out the flop, and fold to a BIG reraise... Most people are bad enough at the $10SNG level that I'll get better opportunities to win chips...

You should check-raise that flop big time. I don't know what you're thinking just calling like that. He could be bluffing the turn since you showed weakness. I'd probably end up calling since I see people play Ax like this all the time and the huge overbet after you showed weakness seems like a bluff.
