Too risky?

Postby mikos » Fri Jan 20, 2006 11:33 pm

Thinking I called this needlessly. Was thinking first place (to go after SB) and the I think I had odds to call (as my other 3 J's and A's were outs). Thoughts? Too risky?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t200 (5 handed)

UTG (t1380)
MP (t2330)
Hero (t2850)
SB (t5230)
BB (t1710)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [Js], [As].
2 folds, Hero calls t200, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (t600) [6c], [5h], [9s] (3 players)
SB checks, BB bets t200, Hero calls t200, SB calls t200.

Turn: (t1200) [2s] (3 players)
SB checks, BB bets t1285 (All-In), Hero raises to t2425, SB folds.

River: (t4910) [2h] (2 players, 1 all-in)

Final Pot: t4910

Results in white below:
Hero has Js As (one pair, twos).
BB has Ks 6s (two pair, sixes and twos).
Outcome: BB wins t3770. Hero wins t1140.

That's a classic pump it situation. A raise preflop then a continuation bet (if necessary) would probably win the pot. Not raising suited AJ preflop I woulda dumped it after the flop with any kind of bet.

You can't afford to make many mistakes in an SNG and come out a winner. Not raising PF was the major mistake and it kept going bad from there. You have to be aggressive, esp when you have position. Then, you called an all-in, which is usually a mistake without having what you have to believe is the best hand. Unless you're sure, you can't do it and expect to survive very often.

This hand is a good learning experience for you. Good you submitted it.

OK, reading it back it does sound foolish. I was reviewing the tourney to see why I would limp. I thought it was because the BB was raising everytime all limped. In retrospect, it was a foolish move. Thanks for the honesty all.

Great feedback and thanks to all for being civil.

Glad I posted and will stop hitting myself with this hammer in a few days. lol
