When to loosen up with Any Ace?

Postby MTPaid » Fri Jan 20, 2006 1:45 pm

For the purpose of this conversation, I am only talking about unsuited Aces in this thread.

I generally play a tight game, unless I am playing the players instead of the cards, and fold anything <AT in a 8 to 10 handed game. I'll even dump AT and sometimes AJ in early position.

I have 2 questions to pose here:
1 - What are the odds that someone else will have an Ace when you have one when the table is 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2 handed.
2 - When do you loosen up and start playing any Ace.

At 6 handed I will start playing A8 and higher from MP and any Ace from CO or But if nobody has opened yet.

At 5 handed I'll play A5 or greater from any position and any Ace from CO or But if nobody has opened yet.

At 4 handed I'll open with any Ace for a raise any position.

Do you guys play the same?

Pretty much, yes. However, it's so situational I couldn't give you a set answer. It pays to be flexible.

Your strategy with aces sounds reasonable. The fewer opponents at a table the more hands are worth. The texture of the table generally helps me to be decide how aggressive I should be with ace small kicker. If the table or opponents acting after me are mostly tight I tend to raise with them more at a loose table or with loose opponents acting after me I tend to muck or restrict raises to A8 or better. I just don't want to get too involved with ace small kicker unless the blinds dictate I make a move to survive in the SNG. As I may run into an opponent with an ace with a bigger kicker.
As to how often you will run into an opponent with ace if you are holding one. I once dealt out cards to 9 opponents (to simulate a full table stars SNG) and the flop and counted the number of times I ran into another ace. After a sample of 100 such deals I found that on the flop odds were about 1.5 to 1 against an opponent having an ace if was delt one. Now thats a very small sample size so take what I am saying with a grain of salt, but I just thought I would mention it. [/code]

Maybe I'm too tight 5 handed, but I don't play A5 UTG there unless there are other considerations in play (stack sizes, etc). I would prefer to keep it to AT+, maybe A8s at the lowest. THis is only UTG at 5 handed. This is equivalent to MP at a full table. Do you play A5o there? I sure as heck don't, so I won't do it 5 handed. From the CO I will play any ace though, if the blinds are tight. If not, I will increase my standards a bit.

Any ace on the button is a good strategy though. However, you need to be raising with a lot more than just any ace from there too. Any decent king, queen, hands like JT, any PP, etc.
