Question on the Turn

Postby Spellbinder » Fri Apr 07, 2006 6:35 am

Hi,

I had a quick question that I am not sure if I am doing something right or a big leak.
It is regarding wraps vs sets (PLO) . If on the turn your wrap has hit (giving me the str8) and the person with the set pots it, is this a situation to cram the pot or just call and wait for the river to fall?

I have been pushing on the turn and the last 5 times the board has paired on the river and naturally I lost my stack. My thoughts were that if a dead card did land on the river I would not be able to get the persons stack in, soi was thinking it was best to push on the turn when I had a str8 vs there set. If he folds, I get the nice sized pot and if he calls he is not getting the proper odds for his FH so in the long run I should come out ahead. Is this flawed reasoning? Since it has blown up in my face so much I just wanted to see if thats just variance or me being a ninny. I know its just the $10 board now but I wanted to correct problems now while the stacks are small before making the same mistakes on bigger boards in the future.

Thanks

FWIW, the 'set vs. str8/flush/draw to str8 or flush' is probably the most discussed PLO/PLO8 scenario, and there rarely will be total agreement from everyone on how to play it on the flop. In almost every case, however, the made hand is correct in pushing on the turn, but the drawing hand will often have the correct odds to call, so it's a case where neither player could be wrong. IMO, this is why you'll see a lot of rivers run twice in huge PLO/PLO8 cash games (B&M of course).

The aspect of split pots in PLO8 makes it a little clearer, most of the time a made str8 or flush with no low or low draw will be a dog to a set or flush draw that does have a low draw (assuming there are 2 low cards on the board after the turn). This is why multiway hands are more important to hold in PLO8.
