I am a little confused.

I have heard countless times that you shouldn't go broke with TPTK. I know that isn't an absolute and everything in poker depends on your opponent, your position, ... but I would say that the majority of the time it is true. Coupling that idea with the fact that most players would check fold if they missed I really don't understand the pre-flop call. You are only going to hit the flop approx 1/3 of the time and unless you hit it really big (top 2, trips) you are to have to lay you hand down to aggression.

Is this just a case of everyone believing that they will be able to out play their opponent if they hit or if they miss and their opponent checks?

Big slick has always given me a big case of the willies.

Gooper you make a good point, this is actually why I say that I check raise and see if I can take down the pot. The fact that the game just started make me want to make this play even more. Early in the game you are probably going to win this more tha 50% of the time, unless your opponant has a big pair or the flop hit them hard. I think they are just as likely playing AQ, AJ, KQ.

The one thing that also got missed in this post, is another major reason why I am going to be more likely to check raise here in a new game, even more than any other time. Advertising, when a new table starts everyone is at their most attentive, eveyone is trying to get a feel for the table texture, what you do in the first 10 hands is going to stick in people minds as much as the next 100 hands after that. If you check raise here, even if you get reraised, it will stick with people. This works best if you get a fold and dont have to show your cards, people will have no idea what the hell just happened.
