Manipulation- Getting a call

Postby Telemachus » Tue Mar 01, 2005 10:51 am

I posted this topic in ATE's section and he suggested it was too in-depth a subject to be covered without paying for a lesson, which seems entirely reasonable. I post it here to see if anyone has any thoughts and hopefully spark a discussion. This topic is not exclusively linked to tournaments, but I post it here as they are what I play most. Much of this is applicable mostly to B and M casinos, although I think some of it is applicable online too.

What techniques do people use to induce a call from an opponent when you have a monster hand? I remember reading Mike Caro's suggestions about keeping your mouth shut when you want a fold, and making little comments indicating uncertainty when you want a call, and I think I use these to pretty good effect. For example, one of the things he suggests when you want a call is to chat a little, and introduce some doubt or hesitation about what you might have, which I have found very handy against those players who want to call 'because they just have to see.'

It is clearly very important to correctly evaluate the strength and intelligence of your opposition. For example, it is clearly wrong to feign the old shaky hand 'tell' (i.e. pretend you have a monster when you don't) if your opponent isn't clued up enough to A Spot it in the first place and B recognise what it 'means'.

So, of course, the only short answer is 'It depends', on the player, etc etc, but what other tools could be used, depending on the circumstances to this effect?

What other techniques would you use to induce a call when you suspect your opponent might fold and you have the nuts?

I have seen players kind of click there lips and shake there head acting like they missed there draw when they hit it or already had it. Make there shoulders drop when they see you reach for your chips like there unhappy that you are about to call if they have acted first.

Verbal tells which I have seen both online and B & M are "this is a suckers bet" another one is "I think you have me out kicked" I have also seen honesty. As the player was pushing his chips in he said "I have the nuts you might as well muck". I have seen "I don't have anything but I think your bluffing". Asking if they have XX whatever the nut are. Most of the time it is the 2 cards you have in your hand.

One that I see online is "crap I hit the wrong button". If you see this FOLD!

...one of my favorites, is to type in "don't call, PLEASE" ...subliminally it puts in their head the word 'call'...plus MOST people will do the opposite of what you're saying here and call...if you command them by saying "do NOT call!!" without the word please, they're more likely to fold, because they'll think if they DO call, and get beat, they'll appear the idiot, since you DID tell them not to call...putting please on it, softens it, and they usually won't think of the idiot thing...say it ONCE,,,,then look down in submission if you're playing live, and don't say anything else...this'll reinforce them calling also...
as with everything, not 100% reliable, but it's on up there, i've found.

I've seen someone raise after being sucked out and typed in the box "I'm on tilt" so I was worried, but he only min raised so I called from the bb with JJ in a SNG. The flop came AJ 6, I checked, he bet 1/2 pot, I reraised him 4x his bet, he goes all in for a little more and I call to show me AA. That chat was definately a tell.

Unfortunately for him, a J hit on the turn to give me quads and take the pot and knock him out. HAHA. He should have raised me preflop, I might have folded that early in a SNG.

Some excellent thoughts here. Thanks for some v helpful suggestions.

What about using a players ego against him (a kind of mental aikedo)?

I have found that overtly macho players often hate to throw away a hand, if you question their masculinity, or introduce the possibility they may not have the guts, or balls, to call. This only works against unsophisticated, macho players, who are, in my experience, almost exclusively male. However, I have found quite a few of them and, as long as you don't overdo it, you can easily expolit it. One guy I used to play with regarded a re-raise as an affront to his manhood- he would almost always play back at you.
