Party's new structure -- fold kings preflop?

Postby Nortonesque » Thu Mar 03, 2005 10:44 pm

So this is my very first hand at party's new NL structure. I just sat down and have no reads. At the old structure the money gets in pretty quickly, but now it seems like there's room for a decision.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (10 handed)

UTG+2 ($35.35)
MP1 ($16.75)
MP2 ($81.7)
MP3 ($27.25)
Hero ($25)
Button ($12.9)
SB ($18.15)
BB ($23.05)
UTG ($12.7)
UTG+1 ($28.06)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [Kd], [Kc]. Hero posts a blind of $0.25. SB posts a blind of $0.1.
UTG calls $0.25, 2 folds, MP1 raises to $1, MP2 raises to $3, 1 fold, Hero (poster) raises to $9.75, 3 folds, UTG folds, MP1 folds, MP2 raises to $25, Hero ???

If ever there was a time to fold kings, this is it. Im still not sure i caould do it on a Party $25 NL table though. I think I would need a pretty good read.

Alot of people will make that move with AK or QQ as well as AA, so even at even money (which youre getting better than), its usually a call here.

40% of your stack is already in the pot. So you'd have to figure yourself with under having a 30% chance to win here to fold. Assuming you're only a 30% chance to win here is giving your opponnents way too much credit.

It doesn't get much more automatic of a call than this. He's even a big stack, you'd be giving the big stack way too much credit. The size of his bet is the exact size of your stack. This is often done as an intimidation technique. (Note: This certainly is not a definite tell, and you shouldn't base any major decisions on it, but when the average player bets my exact stack all in I'd be willing to wager part of him is doing it in an effort to intimidate me)

Palman, I disagree with your read here.

My feeling is that normally players with a big stack will make a small bet to put someone all in as a non-intimidatory technique, i.e. to push the smallest amount possible to induce a call. If someone has $18 left and a bigger stack has $200, I frequently see the big stack with a big hand pushing in $20 or whatever to get a call; seems to me moving all in (i.e. pointlessly putting in $200 here) is a more intimidatory technique and with most players pushing the big stack with no reason is intended (I think) to be more intimidatory. When I see someone betting my exact stack or just over when I have a smaller stack than them I am more inclined to be cautious than if they simply dump all in.

What are other people's take on this? Perhaps I am wrong but I'm yet to be convinced.

I wouldn't re-raise preflop. I don't like putting in a third raise after a raise and a re-raise as they can put you squarely on KK-AA and fold JJ and QQ. By smooth-calling you leave them wondering what you have as you could have a wider range of hands. If he has AA I'm going broke either way in all liklihood but I want to be able to trap the other player if he has a lower overpair on the flop.

Thanks MG, I was wondering about that. I'll consider that strategy next time. (Of course the first guy claimed to have JJ, and would have hit a set on the flop.)
