Beat on the River Again...am i doing something wrong?

Postby Thxlbx » Sun May 28, 2006 11:30 pm

Villian raised 4xBB preflop, so I put him on 10-10 up to A-A...which is what he had..beat me on the river, should I have pushed after his initial raise, would that have made a difference?

Your question makes no sense.

You got all the money in as a pretty good favorite...good time are ahead when you win these "races".

I probably just need to hear that....it just seems for the last week or so I am losing in this situation several times, so I was just looking to see if I am missing something obvious. I seem to be winning small pots lately, and losing big ones.

bet the current pot=never a bad place to start
get your money in good and even if you are a 90% favorite you will still lose 1 out of 10 times.
your goal is to have as many of those situations as possible and it will even out, just try to get as much in as possible when they happen.

I think I need to get back to betting the pot, I would always bet the pot at the 5NL level, and would get called much more often...at 10NL so far, everyone seems to fold when I have a set and bet the pot, not sure if it is my image or what. Maybe instead of betting less trying to get calls I should just bet the pot and if everyone folds, collect what I can, and try to avoid big losses. I do not want to play weak tight scared either.

STOP THE MIN-RAISES, OMG!!! STOP IT!!!

You got him all-in on the flop as the MAJOR favorite - he only would improve 20% of the time by the river. Be happy. Try not to be results oriented here.

Thanks for the advice, am scrubbing the min raise from my current strategy, looking back, I hardly ever min raised at 5NL and have done much more at 10NL due to everyone folding when I bet the pot or larger on a big hand. I am going to bet strong, and take what comes.

Edit: This hand I posted put me down a buy-in right away when I started playing tonight. After reading some posts here and betting more, I can happily say that I won it back plus another 1/2 buy-in to end up on the plus side for the evening. I think the min-raise had become a weak leak in my game, hopefully closing it will lead to more success. Thanks again everybody!

yeah... seroiusly mini raise needs to go. i use it maybe twice a month in special situations. i don't see any of the regulars on 5/10 doing it either (at least the good ones.)

As for the hand, when the money went in he was drawing to 6 outs (2 aces, 4 fours.) Can't ask for better in that. great long term win.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who commented on this hand. I was dealt pocket 3's again tonight, flopped a set, but instead of min raising I bet the pot and then reraised all in...and won. Actually had a very nice 2 hour run in 10NL, winning almost two buy-ins...and I did not min raise once. Not sure how I got on the min raise train in the first place, but I sure as hell am off of it now. Thanks again everybody!
