Did I misplay this KK? ($50NL FR)

Postby Pozzo » Tue Jun 06, 2006 8:40 pm

I first posted this in the low content section to let off some bad beat steam, but then I started thinking about it and I want to know if I misplayed it.

I ($66) open raise in EP with [Kh] [Kd] for $3.

Short stack goes all in for $10.

BB ($69) flat calls. I think about pushing but I am a bit scared about the BB call, so I call to see a flop. BB has only been at the table for about 15 min and I did not observe anything significant about his play.

Flop ($29) is [8c] [Qs] [Kc]. Beautiful. There is not a hand I can put him on that I am not way ahead of. I'm hoping he has AA or even better QQ. AK of clubs is the only thing I would be afraid of. He checks to me, I bet $10. He calls.

Turn ($49) is [3s]. He checks. I push in for $47. He thinks for 2 seconds and calls.

River is [Jc].

Villain shows [Ac] [Qc] and wins $143 pot with the flush.

What could I have done differently? Push preflop and hope the BB doesn't have Aces?
I don't know if betting more on the flop would have made a difference since he called my allin pretty quickly on the turn. Or do you think that my underbet on the flop showed too much weakness and allowed him to think that his Q was good?

Personally, I would've pushed the kings preflop, pushed them hard. If he has aces, he has aces. I'd think if he had aces he would've pushed himself since he had very bad position postflop and would probably rather take on the single all-in player with bullets rather than both of you. I'd want him out of there and get heads up myself with the all-in opponent so that if a scare card shows up on the flop (an ace) my decision has already been made and I'd just have to lose a small amount to the all-in person if he happened to have one (and I didn't catch a set of course).

I also don't like the small flop bet with two clubs showing. He has pretty good odds to make that call. Yeah, there may not've been anything you could've done to not lose here. He may have even called an all-in flop bet. But that's really not important actually. The fact is you gave him nice odds to make that call on the flop to chase his flush; I certainly would've made the call he made, if I didn't push you back myself. His all-in call on the turn was definitely iffy (if he was going to go all-in he should've pushed himself), but that's poker and it was just bad luck at that point that you lost. But I think you should've made him pay way more than he did just to get to the turn by making him pay lots more preflop and/or on the flop.

If I had to do it over again I would do it a little differently, but I think you're right Kenny that I should just see it as a bad beat and move on.

Thanks guys!

I love the feedback. Thanks again.

Honestly I was scared to push in preflop because I had lost 2 buy-ins already that day by getting allin preflop with KK , once to AA and once to AK (and then after this hand I lost a 3rd with KK all-in preflop to 10 3o). I guess not letting the outcome of previous hands affect my decision in a current hand is something I have to work on.

Was the villain correct preflop to call the $10 all-in cold, not knowing what I was going to do behind him?

I know my flop bet was weak but the one thing I knew about this guy was that he was aggressive, so I was trying to induce a check-raise on the flop with the weak bet.

What are the most likely hands you can put him on? Everyone is saying he would have re-raised to isolate if he had AA, but isn't there a chance he wanted to keep me in the hand for the side pot if he had AA?

AA, QQ, JJ, TT ? He can't have AK of clubs because the Kc is on the board. AQs or AJc are the only hands I'm afraid of, and at the time they seemed the least likely.

No matter what, I blew it preflop. Post-flop it seems like nothing would have made a difference.

Thanks again!
