Well, the upshot is that obviously I should've check-raised the flop. I felt on the turn he had A2 or the nut flush or both, in which case I'm putting rather a lot of money in for half a pot. Obviously holding trips I have a draw to a boat but I still hate the way I played this, mostly for the reasons others have stated.
I used to check-raise all the time but now I do it fairly infrequently in PLO, I feel it can often be a bit of a leak in PLO to CR too much when the money's very deep. Perhaps that's rubbing off on my PLO8.
I managed to throw away half a stack in a $400 PLO8 game last night as well by being reticent to check-raise into a preflop raiser OOP; well, that wasn't the only reason (calling the turn and river when I could arguably have folded either street didn't help!) but I'm obviously going to have to refine my PLO8 game lately because I feel I'm making too many really awful plays (as in this hand here). Part of posting it was to kick myself in the ass to be honest.
