As ant says, a lot depends on your read of the villain.

But assuming I have no solid read, I usually always go for a check-call if I'm out of position. If in position and checked to me, I'll usually also check if all I have is a pair but will bet with two pairs or better. If I get check-raised in that situation, I'll have to call. If he leads out with a bet on the river, I'll generally call with TPGK or better but fold anything less.

Someone betting into me I have no problem calling, (well it irks me but) it's getting check raised that really bothers me.

I also need to stop leading out when I'm first to act in situations like that....don't ask me why I'll bet instead of check/call...need to make an effort to stop leading in that scenario.

I'll give you a slightly different perspective. I play live a lot where reads are alot more impportant.
I probably come into a situation every three- four hours or so of live play (maybe once a session) that I will bluff checkraise the river when a three flush comes as long as the right player is doing the betting. So people ARE doing it. When you fold the pot is usually 8 bets or so so you have to be right 88% of the time and I think that accuracy rate is very difficult live, and even more difficult online.
I have gotten elderly nits to lay down top set before - I of course don't show and just tell them "nice fold" so they feel good about it - keeps the game better.
