As ant says, a lot depends on your read of the villain.
But assuming I have no solid read, I usually always go for a check-call if I'm out of position. If in position and checked to me, I'll usually also check if all I have is a pair but will bet with two pairs or better. If I get check-raised in that situation, I'll have to call. If he leads out with a bet on the river, I'll generally call with TPGK or better but fold anything less.
