Tough spot with medium set (2-4 6m)

Postby Smokin'Al » Wed Aug 09, 2006 7:50 pm

6 handed. I've been playing with villain for about 150 hands. He's pretty loose pre-flop, and calls quite a lot on the flop/turn. He's not afraid to put big bets in in big pots, seemingly too often to have a monster every time. No hands really stick out, he's lost one, won one but mostly opponents have folded.

I've only been involved with him in a few raised pots (my raises); a few he folded on the flop, once we checked the flop and he check-min-raised me on a flush turn (I folded). Another time he called the flop with a weak flush draw and led the river with a flush (I had 88, ~overpair).

I've been caught making a couple of marginal plays (raises with draws), for what it's worth.

HAND:

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $4 BB (6 handed) from (Format: FlopTurnRiver)

UTG ($569.30)
MP ($400)
Hero ($578.95)
Button ($405.05)
SB ($582)
BB ($834.10)

Preflop: Hero is CO with 7Image, 7Image.
2 folds, Hero raises to $14, 2 folds, BB calls $10.

Flop: ($30) 7Image, 6Image, 8Image (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $24, BB raises to $60, Hero calls $36.

Turn: ($150) AImage (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets $120, BB raises to $528, Hero ??? ($384 to call, $800 pot)

THOUGHTS:

Should I have checked behind on the turn? I was thinking his range was 2-pair, set, straight, straight+fl draw. Once he check-raises me a second time is it an easy fold? Against a straight I need 3:1, he's giving me 2:1

Middle set in a raised heads up pot at a shorthanded table. No fold for you!

Even though his erratic betting makes it hard to know what he has, there are just way too many hands you beat for you to consider folding.

66, 86, 87. A8, A6, A7, [Ac] [9c], etc etc...

Only behind to five hands AA, 88, T9, 95, 54, at least two of which are very unlikely.

As played, I would have called. If he's that liberal with check raises and he's done it to you before, I think that the call is warranted. The chances that he has 2 pair or even a bear 9 aren't that bad, IMO.

That being said, I'd def reraise on the flop and if not, at least check behind on the turn and probably shove a river that doesn't make a 4 card straight.
^ No, I didn't limp with that hand.

Results: I call, he has 54o, I catch, villain calls me an idiot. I'm running bad, so I believe him.

(Of course it's true; just for not raising the flop, rather than for calling the river).

The thing is I'd seen him call lots in big pots, and bet lots, but a double-check-raise..?

I hadn't considered myself pot committed with 2:1, but perhaps you're right

If I don't raise the flop, I'm getting it all in on the turn. Every time.

in a shorthanded game his hand range is going to be very wide. he could have a smaller set or a two pair hand... both of which you crush. if he does have the straight, you have outs. i think your call was good.

I had almost this exact same hand the other day, except I didnt raise, I called a raise as did the BB.

I had 99....flop was 89T...and he had 67. I wasnt as luck as you though and I didnt fill up. Another fool went to the felt with J6, so I had more than correct odds 3 way.
