I think I should have raised preflop, right?

Postby PokerWolf » Wed Aug 30, 2006 6:21 pm

I am really trying to tighten up my play a bit. If I start running at anything over 20% I take a hard look at my hand selection to make sure I am not falling into old habits. One side effect that surprises me is that I am no longer as sure what to raise with.

I feel like I should have raised preflop with this. Instead, I called and when I was bet into on the flop, I raised to find out where I was. When I was reraised, I had to fold, but I am not sure that I did not lay down the best hand. I feel that if I had raised preflop, I would have had control of the hand, and a much clearer idea of where I was.

Please let me know what you think.

Final pot: $0.84

Thanks
Dave

I currently play in the same game as posted and I usually dump KQo from MP1.

Looks like your against a flopped straight. I probably move on to the next hand.

Im sure the other posters will be of more help than I have been.

Fold preflop but as played I'm probably going broke here.
TP + OE + 2NBDFD = Ship it.
Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.

So, SNG do you think these players on UB are as terrible as we hear from the other sites?

Sometimes I read people talking about common characteristics of micro stakes players and I don't see it.

I grant you there are a lot of bad players, but many of them are very good.

Like most played I've gone to $0.01/$0.02 to screw around, and from the 30 hands or so I've played or seen I would never lay down top pair much less an overpair simply because the games are so crazy.

As for learning good poker, you should lay this hand down preflop but I'm not doubting you can still make money playing it at this low of stakes.

Okay, so you guys have convinced me that I am overvaluing some hands in MP. Thank you, your answers probably plug 3 leaks in my game.

What about AQo->ATo? are these nogood in MP as well?

I don't really have enough hands in my poker tracker to tell, for sure. The ones I do have tell me that AQ is fine, AJ is horrible, and surprisingly, AT is fine. I think that is because I tend to fall in love with AJ, and overplay it... I will work on that.

Thanks for any input

there are a lot of reasons to raise in NL holdem. "finding out where you are" isnt one of them.

the reason that raising helps you "find out where you are" is because it helps "your opponent play perfectly."

by "finding out where you are" you more or less just drastically reduce your EV.
