Good laydown, or should I have seen the flop?

Postby PokerWolf » Tue Aug 29, 2006 10:35 am

At a different table I called a tight player's (7% VP$P) reraise of my JJ and of course the inevitable happened, he had aces. It was a donk move and I hope I learned from it. I hope I didn’t get too gun shy, though.

I only have 45 hands on villain but so far he is tight, 11% VP$P, and I think of him as passive. His preflop raise is 4.2, and his Total aggression is 39.

Was this a good laydown, or was it weak?

If he only raises 4.2 percent then he probably only reraises AA, KK, and maybe AK/QQ. You're 20-80 behind 2 of those and even against the others. I think JJ is highly unlikely. A fold makes sense.

There are a few reasons here why its not a clear cut fold...

1st the gem that you're playing nl10.

2nd The fact you only have 42 hands on him changes things drastically, he could very well be running cold.

3rd You only have 74 big blinds, there is 17 in the pot when its back to you and you have 69 left. If you wanna gamble you could call and get it all in on any flop bar AK X. ...pushing preflops no good cos only better hands call.

But folding is low varience and you're probably only loseing a tiny bit of ev?

I think it is a good fold. I don't like this situation where you are probaby just a coinflip or completely dominated. And I don't think I would just call here. I would push or fold. The pot will be about 4.60 and you will have $5 left behind. I don't like calling off a third of my chips stack here and then check/folding the flop if an Ace or king comes. If opponents had different stats, maybe things would be different. As played, I fold this.

You will find alot of spots with a much better chance to collect money...no need to risk alot on marginal situations like this one.

BTW, you need to top off your stack to $10 whenever you have a chance. Being at $7.42 to start this hand is almost criminally negligent. You want to be at $10 or very close to it virtually all of the time so you make alot more on your opponents when you get your stacks in. At NL25, the lowest I have my stack at is 23.5.
