Decision time

Postby excession » Sun Sep 03, 2006 11:36 am

OK - so I'm having a really tough few months and have reached a decision point.
I moved house in June and the run up to it and the time after it was pretty stressful.
I didn't play much and when I did I was pretty tired and not really on my A game. I ended up breakeven over 2 months (to end July).
I haven't had a losing or even breakeven month in maybe 2 years.

At first August I loaded up Codepoker and played the $100 6 max tables. Ended up down $500 on the month.
Have played a few $15 Turbo SnG's at breakeven)
With various MTT fees costing maybe another $200 I was looking at a $700 loss.

My roll, which had touched $11k about 3 months ago during one session was down just over $10k (my all-time winnings are $4k higher due to cash-outs).

I have just bought a new PC (with nice big Dell 2001 FP screen) and fired up a new instal of PT at Stars a couple of nights ago. 200 hands, another $145 loss.

I think that in playing the $100 I have dropped down to a level where I am donking off $$ with aggro play as they fold so much less than the euro 200's I am used to.
But to be honest my play is intermittent, not that great and my confidence shot after not booking a winning month in the last 4 after say 24 successive winning ones before that, so the $100'a is where I felt comfortable playing.

I had tried the previous 3 months buying in full rather stacked rather than 60% stacked as I tended to on the e200's, but for this last Stars session I just bought in for $60 on two tables.

Poker income has never really been an issue for me as I'm a partner in a commercial law firm.

I have several options at this stage I feel:

1. Give up - admit that I haven't the time or the patience to grind out $$ any more, and cash out all but $2k of my roll to use in MTT's and SnG's for fun play in the future..
2. Re-focus. Buy in Card-Runners vids and watch em. Tighten up, stop being the overagressive fancy-playing donk and go back to beating the crap out of the $100 muppets again (for my sanity and ego's sake)
3. Decide I am playing OK but need to move up to a level where out-thinking your opponents is possible as they have minds..and get away from the $100 tables asap..

Here are all the hands that I won or lost worth more than $10 in the Stars session for illustration. I am consilience.

Losses first in decreasing value..

ugly - I tried to take it off him with the turn re-raise repping the made straight and then bottled another big push bluff on the river. I put him on paint (maybe AT) because of his pre-flop raise but still should have dropped this on flop as TP doesn't get laid down in this game.

I don't mind seeing a flop with JTs and position on the raiser for 2BB's (esp. as 2 other came along). I then floated his weak CB and even weaker turn bet and put in a half pot steal when the two left checked to me in on the river with a very scary board. Of course the first had hit 2 pair with the [3d] and check-called. Maybe should have tried to take it down with a serious raise earlier but I did have a genuine inside draw to the nuts as well and was worried about a slow-played monster with such weak leads.....still ugly though...

This is the ugliest hand of the night. I put him on a FD (I had one too) but should have checked the turn to see what he did. Betting the turn and river was just overaggressive donkage into a made flush..

More smackage on a mono diamond board. At least I did check my FD on the turn here. Then when I hit TPTK on the river with a very scary board I paid off his 2/3 pot value bet like a good un.

This pissed me off more than any other hand - I can't for the life of my work out how he finds a call with K3 here (pre-flop or on river)...he has nothing but a pair of 3's and any other piece of the board, including the flush or str8 or an overpair beats him - I mean how?

I figured he couldn't call without an overpair or better and he actually layed it down! That said I suspect this was worse potential donkage from me than some of the big loss ones above.

$1 lead into me as PFR in a $10 pot? - that'll be an insta information raise...

There we go - the good bad and the ugly. Obviously with the AA and KK pre-flop all-ins getting cracked it was unlikely to be a +$ session, but if I'd been less 'Action-Andy' I get the feeling it would have been a lot better than -$145..

What do you want to get from poker? Recreation, or $$$? If it's the first, do what will be fun for you, though don't be a total donk. If it's the latter, refocus and get away from your FPS problem.

my vote's for 2 and then 3.

it seems to me that you have a passion for poker. refocus yourself and start playing your a-game with the intentions of moving up once you do. i think you're not being challenged now, and i think the challenge of moving up, playing agaisnt better opponents (in some ways, at least), and playing for bigger stakes is a way you can stay motivated and interested.

taking money from stupid donks is something that is incredibly boring (albeit lucrative). it's really hard to stay focused if you just have to get a simple read and go with it. i dunno, maybe i'm projecting here since i'm going through a similar process (bored with the 100s, and 200s and not enough BR to play higher properly).

anyway, this thread might interest you:

forum/viewtopic.php?t=17510

if you just play MTTs casually, my guess is that you'll FPS/donk your way right back into frustration.

anyway, good luck.

Taking a break from the cash games isn't an option? A little hiatus with some microstakes donking and tourney playing splashed in there for kicks?

I'm just surprised anyone was folding to a CB or a steal attempt at 6-max. I haven't played at a high enough level where anyone folds yet.

I'm facing a situation like this ( Well, I not as good and experienced player as you are ) .

Why only 3 options ?

1 After reading your blog I noticed that you can be described as a Bonuschaser. Maybe is better to stop chasing bonus for a while since it can help to put you on tilt. I found a good RB deal and I'm not chasing bonus anymore. It helps to adjust to my opponends.

2 Playing Omaha, is helping my HE results a lot. FPS and dumb agression pathologies cant develop properly when your opponent has 4 cards. Dont forget to buy PT Omaha. I ordered Zee's Stud for advanced players and I will start to play stud as well.

3 Coach someone

4 Play live for higher stakes. ( Its also helping me a lot, I think I have a multitable problem )

5 Do you play backgammon? If yes, partygammon is really soft. I only spent one week to improve my play. I'm now playing it before poker sessions.

6 My bankroll was to high to the limits I were playing. I had ~$9000, playing NL$50 and I think that lead me to tilt sometimes.Maybe you should cashout more if you are not prepared to move up.

7 Make some new videos ! :D

8 mix with FR. Less var, better readings.

In Tempo :: Your cash games posts are great and you helped me a lot. Please dont leave the cash games.
